MADAME WEB Star Isabela Merced Joins The Cast Of Fede Alvarez's ALIEN Movie

Isabela Merced, who will play a key role in Sony Pictures' Madame Web, has been cast as one of the principal characters in 20th Century Studios' and director Fede Alvarez's mysterious Alien movie.

Fede Alvarez's (Don't Breathe, Evil Dead) mysterious Alien movie has added a new cast member.

Deadline (via SFFGazette.com) reports that Isabela Merced has signed on to star alongside previously cast lead Cailee Spaeny. No details on either of their characters were included in the report.

There's been some speculation that Spaeny might be playing Ellen Ripley's daughter or even a younger version of the iconic sci-fi heroine herself, but we've been given no indication that there's any truth to those theories.

While there is always a chance this film will be connected to the previous instalments in the franchise, it is being described as a reboot. Either way, it's probably safe to assume that it won't continue the divisive plotlines that played out in Ridley Scott's Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.

Scott will produce under his Scott Free banner, however.

Apparently, the legendary filmmaker was intrigued by an idea Alvarez pitched him on a few years ago, and called him out of the blue last year to see if he had any interest in developing it.

Hulu is also working on an Alien TV series with Noah Hawley (Fargo; Legion) that's expected to premiere at some point over the next two years. Whether both projects will be linked in any way remains to be seen.

Merced recently starred as Juliet in 20th Century’s revisionist Romeo & Juliet tale, Rosaline, opposite Kaitlyn Dever. She has also appeared in the likes of Transformers: The Last Knight and the Dora the Explorer movie, and will play a key role in Sony Pictures' upcoming Spider-Man spin-off, Madame Web.

Alvarez will write and direct for 20th Century Studios and Hulu.

I hope this isn't a franchise reboot. The aliens universe is so vast that you don't need to start from scratch to tell a new story. You can jump around different timelines, different places in the universe, etc.

@RedFury - I would like it to be set some time after Alien Resurrection.

@RedFury - This is 100% correct. There's no need to reboot. Just show different humans in a different part of the Galaxy and you're set.

We already don't know enough about Weyland-Yutani to even know what their goal is or how close they are to achieving it. So it's not like anything would be hurt or in need of a restart.

@RedFury - I've always wanted a Colonial Marines series. They don't even need to fight Xenos all the time. One movie could be that. But we know other aliens exist in this universe. They could have them go up against different aliens in different movies.

@CorndogBurglar - I would love to see them dive into what Weyland-Yutani are up to. It's a very untapped part of the series like you said, and it's rife with really cool sci-fi possibilities.

And man... A colonial Marines series would be so good. Cameron brought the franchise to new heights when he introduced that concept. The look, the feel, the attitudes... He made them seem like the real deal. Seeing them traveling the universe and dealing with all kinds of different threats, on different worlds would be super interesting.

@RedFury - I hope it pops the way Prey did for the Predator franchise.

@The1st - that's a great comparison that I hope ends up being true too. I really enjoyed Prey.

I love this actress. Didn't know she was in Madame Web, almost makes it worth checking out. But I will definitely be there for the new Alien movie.

Jesus. Let's dig up the corpse of another franchise and kick the shit out of it.

Hollywood is the least creative place on Earth. Prove me wrong.

@Reeds2Much - Social Media doesn't sell tickets for IP based movies and/or franchises and there is no gatekeeper - thus you don't have to be a 'professional' to put content on social media.

Hollywood is supposedly where the 'Pros' make 'Art' and 'Entertainment.'

The current output is neither Artistic nor Entertaining. Prove me wrong.

Generic whining about the lack of creativity with absolutely no attempt at doing anything about it. Social media. I win again!

@Batmangina - whaaaaat?! You don't want more Alien in your life? I for one will watch everything that's related to this franchise. I get that most of the entries in the franchise aren't pure gold. But it's still pure sci-fi goodness, and I'll take that until the day I die.

This guy already missed the point with Evil Dead. I don't understand why they'd give him another beloved franchise to muck up.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 3/3/2023, 11:49 AM
@XnotAcitizenX - As someone who considers Evil Dead 2 one of my favorite films, I loved what Alvarez did with his Evil Dead. It seemed like a film made by someone who was a big Evil Dead fan. The tone of course was completely different, but that's something I've always admired about it. Because there's no way they could reboot with the same characters and tone as the original and it be any good.
RedFury
RedFury - 3/3/2023, 1:26 PM
@SheepishOne - I've been reading your take on Alvarez's version and you're getting me more and more interested in it.

I never watched it because I'm a die hard evil dead 2, and army of darkness fan. The lack of Bruce, and lack of campiness, didn't excite me about the reimagining. But you seem to have really enjoyed it, and since you're saying Evil Dead 2 is one of your favs, it makes me think it has to be at least something worthy of the title.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 3/3/2023, 1:59 PM
@RedFury - Part of the Army of Darkness movie poster made its way into the design of my wedding cake, if that gives you any indication of how much I love those movies.

That said, Evil Dead is a very different film from the others. It does have its own black sense of humor, but it's more subtle and eerie. There is virtually no camp, which of course is a big departure, but there is a lot of imagery from the other movies. I won't spoil anything in case you end up watching it, but it's a very fun movie. It's not campy fun with hammy performances. But rather, it's fun in the way of watching it and thinking "oh God, I thought this particular thing was kind of silly in the original, and now I kinda want to sleep with the lights on because of it".

I don't know if that makes sense, but there's a very visceral fun to be had in watching it, especially for fans of the original.

It's kind of like being a fan of Tim Burton's Batman and Joker and then watching The Dark Knight. Sort of.
RedFury
RedFury - 3/3/2023, 2:23 PM
@SheepishOne - okay.... Best wedding cake ever lol.

And I see what you're saying for sure. It sounds like it's the methed out version of Evil Dead. A love letter to the original, while also allowing itself to be its own thing.

I may or may not ever watch it, but if it pops up I think I have more reason to do so now, than I did before. Thanks for the info!

Here's hoping the newest one is good as well. It looks creepy as hell, but in a very weird and disturbing way. I've always been more of a comedy horror fan, so I'm not sure if this one will be up my alley either. But I'm just happy to see the franchise still going.

Uh-oh. Another reboot.

I did a quick Google search and looks like the first franchise reboot was Return of Godzilla in 1984.

bkmeijer1 - 3/3/2023, 11:44 AM
@ElJefe - that's surprisingly late. I kinda expected some 30s franchise (like a Universals Monsters franchise) to already have been rebooting in the 50s or something
ElJefe
ElJefe - 3/3/2023, 11:49 AM
@bkmeijer1 - There was a definition of what a “reboot” entailed and the movie had to fit the criteria. It was interesting reading, all of which I’ve already forgotten haha.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/3/2023, 11:56 AM
@ElJefe - I believe you. Reboot, remake, remaster. Enough re-'s out there that make it confusing enough. And that's not even counting prequels, sequels and whatnots

ElJefe

@bkmeijer1 - I think the worst of them, for me, are prequels. I just can’t get behind them most of the time. A rare exception is if it’s a villain prequel. For me seeing that evolution is interesting.
