Netflix has released the first trailer for Rampage and San Andreas director Brad Peyton's upcoming sci-fi actioner, Atlas, which stars Jennifer Lopez (Cell, The Mother) as a woman who must learn to "trust A.I." when she finds herself being forced to team-up with a robot mech suit.

We first heard about this project back in 2021 when it was in development at Warner Bros., but updates have been few and far between since. Aron Eli Coleite penned the most recent draft of the script, while Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell will produce for Safehouse Pictures along with Peyton and Jeff Fierson for ASAP Entertainment.

Lopez, who garnered acclaim for her performance in 2019's Hustlers, will play "a woman fighting for humanity in a future where an AI soldier has determined the only way to end war is to end humanity. To out think this rogue AI, Atlas must work with the one thing she fears most — another AI."

With A.I. currently being pushed as the "way forward" by major Hollywood studios, the premise has understandably raised a few eyebrows, and some have already written this one off as little more than A.I. propaganda. Even so, the trailer does feature some exciting footage, as we see Lopez's character hurtling through the sky while attempting to gain control of her new mechanical ally.

Check out the teaser below along with a poster, and let us know what you think.

“I’m so honored to be working with Jennifer, Elaine and the rest of the team at Nuyorican Productions along with our partners Joby and Tory at Safehouse,” Peyton said back when the project was first announced. “Having the chance to direct Jennifer in the title role of this movie is a dream come true, as I know she’ll bring the incredible strength, depth and authenticity we’ve all come to admire from her work. Furthermore, Jeff and I are so excited to be back working with Scott, Ori and the entire team at Netflix. They have been nothing short of amazing to work with and we are blessed to have the opportunity to make another movie on the service.”

The official synopsis reads: "Atlas Shepherd (Jennifer Lopez), a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence, joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past. But when plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from A.I. is to trust it."

Atlas also stars Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, Gregory James Cohan, Abraham Popoola, Lana Parrilla, and Mark Strong. The movie is set to premiere on Netflix on May 24.

@ObserverIO - Case in point: Rachel Zegler, she represents everything wrong with Gen Z actors.

Not a JLo fan, but this could be fun. I would not pay to see it in the theater, but since I already pay for Netflix I might check it out.

I already saw Terminator & Aliens, and all the other movies with Skynet wanting to kill us all, and all the movies with a dude or a chick in a mech suit.

But I'm kinda stupid, so I'll watch it anyway.

Not really convinced by the director, the premise (future of humanity, really? Keep it small scale), or the teaser. Only thing that might get me to watch this is Simu Liu, but otherwise it's another Netflix original pass

Credit where it's due about making a human character have to work with AI to get through the obstacles, something a little subversive when it's always about fighting the AI.

Looks more like a Michelle Rodriguez role, but if Jlo can be an action star that's cool.
