BARBIE And OPPENHEIMER Review Embargoes Lift Ahead Of "Barbenheimer" Weekend

The review embargoes for Barbie and Oppenheimer have now lifted ahead of this weekend's big "Barbenheimer" box office battle, and both movies have been very well-received so far...

Both Universal's Oppenheimer and Warner Bros.' Barbie are both set to hit theaters this weekend, and "Barbenheimer" has blown up (no pun intended) the internet.

Now, the review embargoes for both films have lifted, and, so far, critics seem to be equally impressed by Christopher Nolan's bleak historical drama and Greta Gerwig's colourful doll-based comedy.

Oppenheimer's embargo only just lifted, and with 69 verdicts counted, currently sits at a near-perfect 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Barbie's embargo lifted late last night, and while its initial score was also in the 90s, it's since slipped to a still very impressive 89% with 133 reviews logged.

Despite these high scores, both films do have their detractors, although the outright negative reviews do seem to be few and far between.

The Barbenheimer phenomenon arose from the fact that Nolan's biopic starring Cillian Murphy (and pretty much every actor in Hollywood) and Greta Gerwig's bright fantasy comedy starring Margot Robbie (and every other actor) are so diametrically opposed in tone, with many cinemagoers planning opening weekend double-features.

It will definitely be interesting to see which one comes out on top of the box office.

Are you planning a Barbie/Oppenheimer double-bill this weekend? Drop us a comment down below.

@AmazingFILMporg - I've heard Barbie is awful. Critics will of course not give a shit but I don't expect audience score to be good. I could be wrong tho on that

@McMurdo - it might be great but it just looks not for me.

@McMurdo - I saw it last night. It certainly wasn't awful. However it definitely has a viewpoint and an audience. If words like "patriarchy" upset you, or you don't want to discuss, poke fun at and examine the differences between men and women or the imbalance of power that has existed at times, then this likely isn't for you. I'm split on it, but I laughed a lot and enjoyed it overall. I'm more interested to see how it's looked back on in 10-15 years.

No real interest in Barbie honestly , might check it out for Ryan Gosling atleast eventually.

However looking forward to Oppenheimer , might check it out this weekend if not next.

Congrats to the cast & crew for both on the critical reception so far though!!.

It will make for a weird double feature, and that’s exactly why I want to do it. The flash and Indiana Jones it is.
*and?

Wish I didn't have to go all the way up to Phoenix for a real IMAX theater for Oppenheimer. C'mon Tucson, you're way too big to not have a real IMAX.

@Shivermetimbers - Sorry that you live in Tucson, I have it worse I'm in Havasu. Does Tucson still smell like poop? I was there a half a dozen times for work and it ALWAYS smelled like poop. Kind of how Yuma smells like dirt.

@Deklipz - Haha, Tucson is great most of the time, but there are some annoying parts to it. There was(is?) a water treatment plant on the northwest side right near I-10, so you would smell it anytime you passed through. It used to still horribly at certain times of day, but that hasn't been the case for quite some time now. I had honestly forgot about that. Pretty funny to think that's what someone might think of Tucson actually. haha. And yeah, Havasu is only cool when you're on the water. Hard to imagine living there full time for me.

@Shivermetimbers - *smell horribly*

@Shivermetimbers - Ive been here for 30 years, wasn’t bad when I could enjoy the outdoors but asthma and injuries stopped that a while back. It’s boring as hell. It has been quite a while since I was in Tucson so there’s always that 😂, I can understand someone having the wrong impression once in a long while our treatment plant still makes the whole south/central area of town smell too and I know people that won’t come here because it smells like shit too 😅😅

I would be WAY more interested if Oppenheimer dropped the bomb ON Barbie.

Nolan is slipping.

He's turning into a YES 70s live album - is there a 37 minute version of Roundabout in Oppenheimer?
