BOX OFFICE: ELYSIUM Opens To $1.6M In Thursday Night Showings

Sony's highly anticipated sci-fi thriller Elysium finally opened late last night, and the Matt Damon-starrer debuted with an impressive $1.6M as it's on its way to an estimated $30M+ opening weekend.

After a couple of major misfires earlier this summer with After Earth and White House Down, Sony Pictures appears to have a box office success in the sci-fi thriller Elysium, which stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. The Neill Blomkamp-directed movie opened at 10 PM Thursday night, and grossed a solid $1.6M. Despite a crowded weekend of new releases (Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters, We're The Millers and Disney's Planes) and an R-rating, Elysium will stand out as a $30M+ opening weekend is predicted. The film, which has a reported $115M budget, may even surpass $35M. Reviews have been solid, but suggest that the movie isn't on par with Blomkamp's directorial debut, 2009's District 9 (which earned $37.4M in its opening weekend in August 2009 and made $115.6M domestically). Do you plan on checking out Elysium this weekend?

I will be seeing this Saturday. I would love to see it today but will be working late. So tomorrow will have to do. I really hope this does well & gives Neill a better shot at getting to do more films. Plus gets more of a say in them too.

That being said I would enjoy seeing an Inhumans movie or Martian Manhunter film from him some day.

I wouldn't say it's "Better" than District 9, I'd say its completely different.
District 9 was great because it was a big blockbuster on a next to nothing budget telling a fresh story at a time when immigration reform was at the forefront.

Regardless, I enjoyed it, my lady who doesn't enjoy action movies liked it, so you can make it a date night.

I gotta wait another goddamn week for this one to get here but the day it does come ill be sure to check it out, but I'm worried Blomkamp might have shoot himself in the foot by setting the bar so high with District 9 I fear all of his later movies people are gonna say "It was pretty good but not as good as District 9".

@PanochaLibre you paid money, got 1/4 though to film and left? Yikes, at that rate I doubt you made ten minutes into any movie this summer.

Interesting that you walked out PanochaLibre. I've started walking out of movies that disappoint me in my own little protest. Sometimes managers even offer me my ticket back for another movie without me even asking.

Originally I didn't seem interested in Elysium, it felt like Oblivion with Matt Damon. But in the latest footage it's peaked my interest and while District 9 didn't impress me, I feel like there's a small chance I could enjoy Elysium.

I wouldn't even consider wasting my time with this. Obviously propaganda. I don't mind social commentary, but hitting the audience over the head with it ain't my thing.

And $30-35 million is lame for movie that cost up to $200 million or whatever (including marketing).

@Ekrolo2- re the budget, I was just going by what this story says. After seeing your post, I looked it up on IMDB, and it said $100m.

Regardless, that's not a promising opening, IMHO.
marantaz
marantaz - 8/9/2013, 3:13 PM
Yes, $100M is what I've seen also, and throw in post production cost and you're looking at $150 - $175M total, which means it will have to make twice that to be considered a success by the execs. It looks good enough to get that, but its got a lot of competition that appeals to major segments of the audience more, and its got some seriously bad press and a couple of stars that don't have the appeal they used to. They're lowballing expectations to avoid being embarrassed by poor performance, and that's a very bad sign. By Saturday we'll know which film wins the weekend; if this one doesn't win, it will be considered a bomb.

Blomkamp is a stud and the movie was good. Shaky cam was very distracting to me though. Would have been much more rewarding without it.
It was a little heavy handed politically but I was still able to enjoy the movie.
@saveageguitarist...Zero Dark Thirty was a "conservative" movie and it was good.

District 9 is a better movie.
Elysium isn't bad but I expected more from this director on his second film.

Shooting action was good but when it came to the hand to hand combat it was very shaky & way too much quick cuts.

Do they do that to make the actors seem like real fighters?
In martial arts films when the combatants are skilled fighters, the camera generally stays still.
The performers sell the fighting action, not the crazy camera movement.

loved it ... this director really has a talent for this kind of film.
