Deadline reports that Oblivion has opened at #1 in 48 of the 52 international territories it was released in yesterday (although it opened in the UK on Wednesday). Friday's gross is an estimated $13.1 million, giving it a current total of $23.1 million. That means it's on course for $60.5 million for the weekend. It broke records in Russia with an opening of $1.5 million (the biggest of 2013 so far), while it has since made $3.2 million, making it Tom Cruise's biggest opening ever in that country. Oblivion opens in North America and seven other international territories next weekend. It's not exactly the kind of film which lends itself to a sequel, but if it is a success domestically, that will certainly help increase the odds of Joseph Kosinski's sequel to TRON: Legacy moving ahead! Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete.

Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautifulstranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

STARRING:

Tom Cruise as Jack Harper
Olga Kurylenko as Julia
Morgan Freeman as Malcolm Beech
Zoe Bell as Kara
Andrea Riseborough as Victoria
Melissa Leo as Sally
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Sykes

RELEASE DATE: April 19th, 2013

It was already shown in Russia, saw it, didn't like it — really, really dull unoriginal script (although it was said by studio executives that it is the best script of the decade .__.), also Kosinski clearly doesn't know how to work with actors. However, visually STUNNING, Riseborough was great.

Morgan Freeman is there for 3 minutes. Ending is not satisfying enough.

"The main reason Universal cast Cruise is because he’s still a star internationally".

Really? - REALLY?!

I don't know about elsewhere but Cruise is seen as a complete nutjob over here in the U.K after John Sweeney highlighted his beliefs in Scientology in a Panorama special.

I don't know of anyone you thinks Cruise is attractive with A-list credibilty as a movie-star anymore - but then again I'd expect Universal to have invested-interest and be a little slow behind international public opinion.

I have yet to see one review that rates this film as worth seeing.

@SimyJo
It's DEFINITELY worth seeing, I may not be happy with the movie as it is, but I am definitely happy that it exists.

SERIOUSLY? Star Trek Into Darkness, Elysium, After Earth, Ender's Game.

Elysium will beat them all including Oblivion.

Cruise has been the biggest actor since the 80's. Sure, Depp and RDJ are huge actors, but not consistent enough in the past 30 years.

Now, can we get Cruise to play Les Grossman again?

Oblivion is a solid flick. Unoriginal, but beautiful. Better than Tron Legacy IMO.

Saw it Opening day... Just because of Cruise!
I liked Tron: Legacy for pretty much everything everyone liked it... & disliked it for same reasons as other... All in all I really liked & enjoyed it!

Oblivion is though amazing (for me)!
& I say that with a realisation that lot of SciFi fans like me might not like it; just cuz it's actually NOT original!
Overall concept is great; Cruise & Andera Risebrough are amazing!
Visual are great!
I don't have any major issue but while I enjoyed that it borrowed from nearly every SciFi film you'll have seen from 2001 to PROMETHEUS!
As I loved that, I know a lot of people won't!

On twists... Well there are like 3/4 in the film... Only one didn't surprised me but other we genuinely great!
& I really like that fact that almost 60-65% into the film... Stuff that happens isn't shown at all in trailer & clips & all the BTS footage!
So that portion was entertaining enough when I has no idea what's gona come as nothing from trailer or clips was left to be there...!

I hope it does well enough for a sequel... I'm more into OBLIVION sequel than Tron: Legacy 2!
Although that is more likely & is preetymuch surely gona happen; & I'm excited for this too!

& All Cruise hater; whether u like him or not... He's STILL the Biggest Movie Star on Planet EARTH.... Will Smith can suck his DJANGO comments & his stardom.... Leo DiCaprio & Johnny Depp are two other SuperStar!
& as much as I love RDJ; Well all he's done since IRON MAN in 2008... Is IRON MAN & Sherlock Holmes... & uptill Avengers, Iron Man didn't have a great forigen BoxOffice!
His stardom can't be judged when All his successful film (& that too in last 5 ish years only) have been in 2 Franchises!

TOM, DEPP & DiCAPRIO are biggest movie stars ... Will Smith too!
But Will is the only one who feels he's the King or some shit... Which HE IS NOT!!
