Tom Cruise has shown that he still has it when it comes to box office clout after an impressive $38.2 million opening in North America for Oblivion this weekend. The Joseph Kosinski helmed original sci-fi movie has gone straight to the top spot after opening on Friday with a B- CinemaScore from moviegoers. What's significant about this opening is that it's higher than the combined debuts of both of the films that Cruise starred in last year; Rock of Ages ($14.4 million) and Jack Reacher ($15.2 million). This is his best since Mission Impossible 3 in 2006 which took $47 million during its opening weekend. It's overseas where Cruise mostly dominates, and Oblivion had taken over $60 million internationally leading into its US opening. It now has a total of $71.9 million, giving it a worldwide cume of $150.2 million. It should continue to do well until Iron Man 3 opens next week. Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete.

Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautifulstranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

Sorry 'bout the hate, but is it Tom or the story / visuals that are filling seats? Haven't seen it yet, but if I do it will be because the trailers look great, not because I detect anything different or new from Cruise.

I hate the weird things about him but honestly, there is no one else like Cruise. I enjoy watching him in everything he is in, including crap fests like knight and Day. He seems to have a genuine passion for what he does.

I don't know about Tony Stark, maybe pre RDjr but not now. I have been thinking for a while that he would be perfect for Dr Strange. I use to want Depp for that role but i think he would go to quirky with it. I don't remember the last time i saw Depp play a normal human.

The movie was really enjoyable, but do not expect ANYTHING original. Literally everything was derivative.

@PsyBoy...definitely made me think of a few other sci-fi movies (particularly Moon, Independence day, Terminator, and Total Recall). That said, IMHO, it was better than Prometheus and was told in such a way that was not as predictable or questionable. That along with incredible visuals, pretty awesome soundtrack, special effects second to none, and great acting make this the best sci-fi movie I've seen in quite a while. Have to let it settle in after just viewing but its current ranked in my top 5 of all time.

Also, casting two hot lead actress didn't hurt either. Especially, Andrea Riseborough! OMG she's effing Hawt!

Good job for Cruise. I hear his performance in this movie was really good. Now, can Les Grossman get his own movie?

I honestly dgaf about the weird stuff I was just never a fan of Cruise and this movie looks like every other Sci Fi movie ever so I won't be seeing this. Good for him though, a 38mil weekend is nothing to snuff at when the movie going climate has been mostly weak outside of the big summer blockbusters and franchises.

I wouldn't mind if he jumped on the CBM bandwagon though I honestly don't know who he could play but I'm not seeing a Tony Stark in him at all.

Cruise was great and as likable as he was in the 90's.

The movie looks pretty and with pretty female co stars.

Story was average but in the upper class of average. Felt like something was missing but I liked it.

Critics were tough on it.

Just got home from the 5PM showing. I guess I don't know what all the griping is about..i went in without any expectations -- and I REALLY enjoyed that movie. The visuals were stunning, Cruise was really great, and the story was standard sci-fi..(not in a bad way.)

Although my only gripe: Oblivion may have dethroned Titanic for the award of most times "Jack!" is exclaimed in one film.

Seriously though, good flick.

This movie was awesome. Loved every minute of it.

MOS trailer was pretty good, but there was one scene where Zod is yelling and he totally sounded and looked like Jack Black haha still going to see it but I thought that was kind of funny.
