BOX OFFICE: Rian Johnson's LOOPER Takes The #2 Spot With An Estimated $20 Million

The early figures for this weekend at the North American box office are in, and while it has been beaten to the top spot by Hotel Transylvania, the critically acclaimed time travel adventure has still had a good opening. Dredd meanwhile is nowhere to be seen. Read on for details!

Sony Pictures have had a good weekend at the North American box office as they secured both #1 and #2 with Hotel Transylvania and Looper. The former is an animated film starring Adam Sandler and his regular cohorts Andy Samberg, Kevin James, Steve Buscemi and David Spade. That opened with $11 million yesterday and looks set to take around $39.5 million for the weekend. However, it was Looper (starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis) which has really impressed as it opened with a solid $6.9 million for an estimated weekend total of $19 million - $20 million. Not at all bad for an R-Rated film such as this one. Unfortunately, the news isn't quite so good for DREDD. It has already slipped right out of the Top 10, making a sequel extremely unlikely at this point. Read my 5* review of DREDD by clicking HERE, and my 4* review of Looper by clicking HERE.

"Dredd meanwhile is nowhere to be seen"

Yep, it's gone. One week in the top 10. Wow, mega disappointing. One of the greatest comic book heroes ever - EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - beaten by a bunch of not-going-to-see-it Yanks! RIP movie Judge Dredd (even if Dredd 3D wasn't a true representation of Judge Dredd's world and a bit of a Die Hard rip-off!).

Anyone thought that the title was a major mistake?

Dredd sounds like Dread. And 'dread' is a negative emotion/feeling. Calling it Dredd' might hade made some people think "I'm going to dread seeing this!"

It's possible.

A good title might have added a few cents or dollars to the overall US box office.

Should have got Bruce Willis to star as Judge Dredd. He would have added a few more dollars to the US gross.

The big question is this...

Which is the bigger, more epic flop of 2012....

John Carter

or

Dredd 3D?

I'm going with Dredd 3D. Dredd 3D (three deeeeee!) is a much smaller budget film but even so, 6 million opening was insanely bad!!!! So my vote is Dredd 3D biggest flop of the year. Whoops.

There is going to be a sequel to Looper called

Booper

where a guy goes back in time to kill Michael Bay before he can start his career.

Not bad considering rated R movies usually get crushed, i have a feeling word of mouth is going to help it out alot

@Dreddhead
You probably [frick]ed it up by slagging it off on every [frick]ing site or forum out there.

Damn shame Dredd isn't doing better. To bad it wasn't released in the summer months, bet it would've made a killing

Family films always dominate the box office....always. while adult orientated movies will get a lot of single ticket sales, family films are guaranteed to get a double purchase with each sale. Kids are the greatest consumers in the world and marketing to them is slam dunk lucrative so don't even try to fight the box office draw....it is what it is. Saw Looper yesterday with the wife and have almost forgotten it....Dredd was better......go see Dredd so we can have a sequel....sheesh.

Shut the [frick] up about which "sounds dumber" and just go and watch the one that you want to watch.

I watched Looper yesterday (great film), and gonna watch Hotel T today, and I'm sure it'll be great too. Tartakovsky (or whatever the spelling is) has made some pretty badass cartoons.

Looper was pretty damn good.
As for Tranny, it must be the biggest hit Sandler's had since Waterboy.

Deserves to do way better than this. This is why Resident Evils and shit like that keep getting made, all the dumbasses pay to see those instead of good, original movies like Looper. Oh well. I'm going to see it for the second time tomorrow.

Reason for Dredd not doing well is the Stallone version.
It's been on tv so both those who saw it there or originally at the theaters don't want more of that.

Wish people would realize its an all new/different take than Stallone's crap.
I like Stallone as Rambo & Rocky but his Judge Dredd did not work.

Bruce Willis seems to have more longevity in his career than any other 80's action star.

I saw Looper last night. I enjoyed it. It did get a little slow on some parts, but overall it was pretty entertaining.

I can't get over how well JGL looked like and imitated Willis. His mannerisms were spot on. Definitely Blunt's best performance. And if you're a Piper Perabo (Covert Affairs) fan, then this is your chance to see 'Annie Walker' like you've never seen her before.
