DISTRICT 9 Sequel Is "Within The Near Future" According To Director Neill Blomkamp

You sneaky fookin' prawns! Director Neill Blomkamp has shared a positive update on his plans for a District 9 sequel, confirming that he is still working on the project despite claims to the contrary.

It's been some time since we heard anything about the long-awaited sequel to District 9, (tentatively titled District 10) but director Neill Blomkamp has shared an update on the project, and it sounds like the movie is still very much in-development.

"I am still working on it," the filmmaker confirmed to Dexerto. "The answer is it's within the near future."

Though Blomkamp has helmed some big sci-fi movies since, he has struggled to match the success of his feature debut, which could be why a lot of people tend to forget what an impact District 9 made when it hit theatres back in 2009 (it even picked up an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture).

The story follows rather loathsome South African internment camp official Wikus Van De Merwe (Sharlto Copley), who begins to empathize with the plight of the aliens he's charged with relocating when his body starts to undergo a terrifying transformation.

We assume the sequel will pick up with Wikus - who had fully changed into a "Prawn" at the end of the first film - and his alien friend Christopher Johnson, but Blomkamp might well decide to move on to new settings/characters.

What would you guys like to see from a District 9 sequel? Drop us a comment down below.

Never seen any of his films except Elysium and I thought that film was pretty cool. I see a lot of people speak highly of his work in District 9. Definitely need to see what all the hype is about

@BlackStar25 - District 9 is a masterpiece.

@BlackStar25 - out of his feature movies, District 9 is probably the best. He also made a few shorts that I think are worth checking out (Rakka, Firebase and Zygote)

@BlackStar25 - District 9 is by far his best feature, though i think if he was given the chance to deliver his take on Halo it would have been that. His other ones were good too, but just paled in comparison. It's also the film that introduced us to Sharlto Copley, one of the most underrated actors I feel, with D9 probably being his best work aswell.

I look forward to the second one. I hope it's not rushed and touches on the same themes in South Africa.

@bkmeijer1 - Dude, Firebase needs to be a movie.

@Fares - definitely agreed. Said in a comment below too, because I definitely think so too

It's been way too long to do a sequel. Would rather see Neill Blomkamp continue with Oats Studio originals

@kingjoeg - same. There were definitely some ideas there that I wanna see made into feature length productions (Rakka, Firebase and Zygote to be precise).

@kingjoeg - Depends on what he's going for. With Star Wars, for example, George always wanted to revisit that galaxy years later. I would imagine Neill has extensive notes and could do something similar.

I am all for his as long as Bloomkamp gets a competent writer to work with him. He has Zack Snyder disease in that he has great visual style but poor storytelling sense.

bkmeijer1 - 6/2/2022, 9:45 AM
@Forthas - something I like to add to the Snyder Syndrome is that it also involves having a good sense of what is cool, but a really bad sense of how to weave such moments together

@bkmeijer1 - Excellent point!!! I find Snyder strange in that he can have iconic moments in his films (warehouse fight scene) and then the most head scratching moments (Martha scene) in the same film. I think his greatest fiilm is Man of Steel because he had people who reign him in.

If Snyder worked with a great writer and producers who could control his most excessive instincts then he would make Denis Villenueve level films.

bkmeijer1 - 6/2/2022, 10:31 AM
@Forthas - I think he and Villenueve have different styles, so I don't think it's the best of comparisons, but I definitely agree Snyder is capable of making a good movie if he has someone to reign him in.

That said, even Man of Steel had some questionable moments (Jonathan dying, or snapping Zod's neck).

About time. Blomkamp's sci-fi stories are always interesting, so I look forward to what he's gonna do with this one. Still wish he got to do Alien 5 though

It's gonna come down to if there is enough story and if it's important enough to tell. It will ne obvious if this is just another installment, or something worthy.

God, I wish we had got his Halo movie instead of whatever Paramount Plus commissioned.

@Waddles -

Funny how this which is around 15 years old looks so much better and better captured the feel for halo than the series we just got.

@generictheeric @Waddles UniqNo- never knew that existed, but now that I've seen it I definitely agree with the sentiment.

Personally I really like the Forward unto Dawn and Nightfall features. They're not the best, but definitely fun Halo experiences in my opinion.

@Waddles - looked it up, and although it is a long read, I found what happened to it: https://www.wired.com/2012/04/halo-movie-generation-xbox/

Didn't read all of it, but it mostly comes down to Fox, Universal and Microsoft not giving in to either's demands and the deal eventually fell through

i would watch it. but i think its been a bit too long between movies. the want and need is not there anymore. kinda like avatar 2. i keep forgetting that a trailer came out.

He's become a one hit wonder. District 9 was great and Elysium was solid. Then Chappie was bad and Demonic was AWFUL. Just leave it be.

@Nightmare - I like Chappie, good movie, District 9 is a masterpiece
SauronthePower
SauronthePower - 7/19/2022, 12:39 AM
@Nightmare - Elysium had some very bad moments. He actually managed to make both William Fichtner AND Jodie Foster look lost onscreen, nevermind what he did to Diego Luna. Also, Elysium definitely suffers from Memorex Syndrome in that he basically tried to harness the quick cheap pop of some of D9’s most emotional moments with the exact same setups and payoffs
