It's been some time since we heard anything about the long-awaited sequel to District 9, (tentatively titled District 10) but director Neill Blomkamp has shared an update on the project, and it sounds like the movie is still very much in-development.
"I am still working on it," the filmmaker confirmed to Dexerto. "The answer is it's within the near future."
Though Blomkamp has helmed some big sci-fi movies since, he has struggled to match the success of his feature debut, which could be why a lot of people tend to forget what an impact District 9 made when it hit theatres back in 2009 (it even picked up an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture).
The story follows rather loathsome South African internment camp official Wikus Van De Merwe (Sharlto Copley), who begins to empathize with the plight of the aliens he's charged with relocating when his body starts to undergo a terrifying transformation.
We assume the sequel will pick up with Wikus - who had fully changed into a "Prawn" at the end of the first film - and his alien friend Christopher Johnson, but Blomkamp might well decide to move on to new settings/characters.
