DUNE Strongly Tipped To Launch Venice Film Festival; Star Dave Bautista Calls It A "Game-Changing" Film

Denis Villeneuve's Dune is currently scheduled for theatrical release this October, but those in attendance at the Venice Film Festival might just get to see the sci-fi adaptation a little earlier...

Variety reports that The Venice Film Festival is gearing up to take place as a "full-fledged physical event" this September, and is expected to run in-person only screenings with several high-profile films on the schedule.

Though Warner Bros. has yet to confirm, Denis Villeneuve's Dune is "strongly tipped" to launch the festival. The highly-anticipated sci-fi adaptation is currently set for a theatrical release on October 1, but journalists and film delegates will likely flock to The Lido in droves to catch an early look at the movie.

Army of the Dead star Dave Bautista will take on the role of Glossu "The Beast" Rabban Harkonnen in Dune, and clearly has high hopes for the film.

"It's gonna be world-changing," the former WWE Champion tells USA Today. "It's going to be a juggernaut of a film. The people who are “Dune” fans, they are so passionate about it. These characters and novels, (Villeneuve) did them justice and that really comes from him being a lifelong fan."

For those unfamiliar with the source material, Dune follows the Atreides family as they relocate to the desolate planet of Arrakis to assume control of the production of the most valuable resource in the galaxy, the Spice Melange. Unfortunately, an act of treachery soon makes an outcast of The Duke Atreides' youngest son Paul, and he must accept his destiny as a powerful prophet of the Arrakis natives known as The Fremen.

You'll find a breakdown of the main characters and who'll be playing them along with some of the previously released images below. We don't spoil any major events from the book, but if you'd rather go in knowing as little as possible, might be best to skip it!

Paul Atreides

Dune1

Paul Atreides is the primary protagonist of Dune.

Born on the planet Caladan to Duke Leto Atreides I and his Bene Gesserit concubine Lady Jessica, Paul eventually travels to Arrakis and winds up becoming a Messiah-like figure to the desert planet's indigenous people, The Fremen. There, he meets and falls in love with a Fremen warrior named Chani, and is forced to choose between settling down with her and embracing the terrifying destiny glimpsed in his spice-induced visions.

Paul will be played by Call Me By Your Name star Timothée Chalamet.

Chani Kynes

Dune2

Fremen warrior and Paul Areides' love interest, Chani is the daughter of half-Fremen planetologist Liet Kynes.

When Paul arrives on Arrakis, Chani is serving under Stilgar as his right-hand woman but soon falls for the mysterious young newcomer - even though she remains wary of the powerful prescient visions they share.

Spider-Man: Far From Home's Zendaya will play Chani in Villeneuve's film.

Lady Jessica Atreides

Dune6

Lady Jessica is the official concubine of Duke Leto Atreides I, and the mother of his son Paul. She is also a member of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, and possesses powerful abilities.

Upon arriving on Arrakis, Jessica is welcomed into the ranks of The Fremen along with her son, and eventually accepts the position of new Reverend Mother, despite being aware of the potentially catastrophic repercussions of this action.

Jessica will be played by Mission: Impossible - Fallout star Rebecca Ferguson.

Duke Leto Atreides I

Dune7

Paul's father Leto Atreides I starts out as the ruler of the planet Caladan, but when The Emperor asks him to take control of Arrakis and oversee spice production there, he relocates to the planet known as Dune with his son and concubine, Jessica.

Leto is generally well liked and respected by all of his subjects for his even-handed and compassionate leadership style, but this also leads to jealousy among his fellow noblemen of the other Great Houses.

This take on Leto Atreides will be brought to life by Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, X-Men: Apocalypse).

Stilgar

Dune4

Stilgar Ben Fifrawi is the noble Naib (leader) of Sietch Tabr, a Fremen tribe of Arrakis, and one of Paul Atreides' most loyal allies.

When Leto and his family relocate to Dune, Stilgar and his people are wary of their motives at first but soon come to view The Duke's son Paul as the desert messiah of their ancient prophecies. Stilgar also strikes up a strong friendship with Duncan Idaho.

In Dune (2020), this character will be played by Javier Bardem (Skyfall, No Country for Old Men, Mother!).

Duncan Idaho

Dune8

Duncan Idaho is a skilled swordmaster loyal to House Atreides who helps to train Paul in various combat styles.

In the novel, Leto sends Duncan to Arrakis as an envoy to get a read on the nomadic Fremen population. While there, Idaho strikes up a friendship with Stilgar and ultimately winds up pledging dual allegiance to the Atreides and the Fremen leader.

Aquaman star Jason Momoa has been cast as this fan-favorite character.

Gurney Halleck

Dune5

The ruthless, but noble Warmaster for House Atreides, Gurney Halleck was one of Paul's principal teachers along with Duncan during his early years on Caladan.

An exceptionally skilled warrior, Gurney is described as "an ugly lump of a man" in the source material, which may suggest that the actor who'll be playing him, Josh Brolin, will be undergoing a slight transformation for the role.

I've been waiting for this film to finally drop!
But somehow I feel that for the general public the hype has died down, so I hope that WB will push it again before release so it's the success we need it to be

@Blergh - WB needs to push hard. Villeneuve's editor has explained that they only ever shot the first half of the book. If they can't make this movie a success in the midst of a pandemic, then we will have another wasted opportunity with the Dune property.

At first I was irritated (not that it matters what I think) with how Dave seems to take jabs at some studio projects that have given him a chance but hypes up others. But when you zoom out and look at everything he's attached to, perhaps at this point in his career he's safe to give criticisms as he sees fit without backlash.

And to be fair, it seems he's only had negative things to say about Marvel/Disney approach to Gunn and his Drax character.

@Turtlestrong - I think he's just brutally honest... maybe to a fault, but it's refreshing to see an actor speak his mind instead of towing the studio line all the time.

@RorMachine - could damage his career though, something I don't want for him. He's a good actor and a dedicated fan.

@Blergh - Those are exactly my concerns. Was feeling irritated because its like'dude you're finally getting picked up in big movies, don't mess it up'

Play the long game, get established, be that linchpin, then you can run your mouth. e.g. Samuel L. Jackson. Seems like he could say or do anything and everyone just shrugs because he is who he is. lol

Gina Carano is example of getting ahead of oneself. We all know there can be a bias in Hollywood (e.g. Chris Pratt blinks wrong and folks come at him for no reason), we all know everyone was watching her like a hawk. Keep your mouth shut, play the long game, take advantage of being in something like the Mandalorian. Then once you're into 2nd, 3rd of your OWN spin-off show, and have been in some other major projects for a few years (outside of Disney). Go for it, say what you want to say. At that point you'd have enough pull to start and do your own thing, get new projects that wouldn't be so isolating as they are now. She's now likely only going to star in extremely conservative backed studio projects because no one else probably wants to touch her or give her a chance.

@Turtlestrong - He hasn't retired from wrestling, so he is making sure he transitions to fulltime actor on his own terms.

I never read the book, but everything I've read and heard about it gets me really interested in it. It's probably the first movie I'm gonna give a chance at watching it at the big screen again.

Blergh - 5/15/2021, 5:18 AM
@bkmeijer - if you ever got the time for it, try to check out Davind Lynch's original movie. It's weird and alien feeling but it has really good visuals and stands out of the crop of sci-fi movies from it's time.

@Blergh - I think I might check it (and the book) out around the time this movie is released. Most likely after if the world really intrigues me

My favorite book of all time. I highly encourage everyone who hasn’t read it to pick it up. And if you like it enough, go through the rest of the series (just Frank Herbert’s 6 novels. You can skip Brian Herbert’s stuff).

It’s mesmerizing, and you can see how it holds influence for Star Wars and other works.

Ahhhh the tried and true “game changer” has finally been replaced by “World Changer”.

Let’s just hope it actually happens...because after all those “game changers” from Disney...still waiting for one of them to actually be legit.
