Hello! I know I am not a frequent contributor to the site, but just to quickly introduce myself, my name is Carter Friend and I am 16 years old. This is a video audition I made for the role of Dink Meeker in the upcoming Ender's Game movie starring Asa Butterfield (and now possible Ford and Steinfeld! :D) being directed by Gavin Hood. I'd really appreciate your honest opinions, and if you do happen to like it, it'd mean so much to me if you would help spread it around. Thanks so much!

Ho Carter!

My true and honest opinion of your audition is that you are decent. Looks wise you pretty much embody what I have always envisioned Dink looking like. My main critique on the performance is that with you sitting directly in front of the camera, it slightly comes across as you just reading the dialogue instead of actually acting out the scene. It is the moments when you motion towards the camera as if it were the person you are talking to; and use your hands to elaborate what you are saying, putting movement to the dialogue that are the best parts of the audition tape.

I would recommend doing the scene again standing up and interacting with the camera as if it were Ender you are talking to. By doing that it takes the audition tape from kind of looking like you are just reading the lines and makes it look like you are acting the part.

also, another way to make the words flow a little better for you and make you seem more natural is to think how you would say Dink's lines to the Ender character in your own words. You don't necessarily need to follow word for word what the character says in the book. ad libbing slightly getting the same points across, but putting those points into your own words will make you sound even better.

Overall, again i think your tape is pretty good and I wish you luck in getting the part.

Side note: aside from Ender and Bean, Dink was my favorite character, so if you get the part, don't screw up! Still pisses me off that in subsequent books Orson Scott Card basically cut Dink's balls off and never filled him out as a character beyond the little of him in Ender's Game.

@l0rdleg0las Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I myself found it harder to convey the maximum amount of emotion while sitting down, but I hope that if I get the part (and that's a ginormous if) then I shan't let you down! haha

I did not think that you looked like dink. The image i always saw in my head was of the blond, blue eyed, european boy who looks like he should be in charge but then for whatever reason didnt take the reigns. Your age and appearance strikes me as more of a Bean type character in some of the later tales. Your read was very stiff. You definitely need practice. That being said, I immensely enjoy hearing dink being read out loud. Keep trying. If you want to continue to read Dink and become more natural at it then i will most definitely continue to watch. Dink was a great character but dont be afraid to try others. It was a big school. If you do want to try him again think about what was happening in the scene. Dink wanted to be alone when he was drifting. He was out there trying to relax and could be a little rough at times anyway, ender was after all there to find out if dink's anger was directed at him. "Ho, Ender." should be said as if slightly annoyed, but then you can go back to being relaxed or even happy as you talk about what you are doing there.
