You know, Looper is one of those rare films that does so many things right, has so many jaw-droppingly good scenes, that at the end of the day I don't mind shutting my brain off to enjoy it. Let's face it time-travel movies will always have issues... unless you're watching 2004's Primer. But with Primer you get to see how character development and dialogue suffer when a film spends an abundance of time explaining the "science" behind time-travel.

In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented - but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a "looper" - a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) - is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good... until the day the mob decides to "close the loop," sending back Joe's future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. Ram Bergman and James D. Stern produce.

LOOPER will be available on DVD/Blu-ray December 31st!

***MAJOR SPOILERS***
@AkshunJaksun - I've seen that argument thrown about a lot, especially on imdb. IMO, that would only be a short-term fix. Who's to say Old Joe didn't learn how to shoot with his other hand in the future? Anyway, he's not going to feel pain, just lose his stronger arm. He was carrying the Gat, so he may still be decently accurate with his other hand. And Young Joe would be tasked with killing Old Joe with his weaker arm using the Blunderbuss, which probably needs two good hands to aim properly. Not going to save Cid's mom that way.

The only other way without killing himself was to kill Old Joe. But at that moment, he only had the Blunderbuss which was effective for no more than 15 yards, and he was definitely much farther away than that. By the time he moves within range, Cid's mom would be dead already and the cycle would have started again.

I believe one of the problems with that scene is that the movie made it look like he had lots of time to think about it, while in reality, he most probably had to make that decision within a second or so.

i don't get why people categorize looper as some brain dead popcorn flick. i thought it was quite a complex film more interested in creating a world and mythology and best of all the characters. the time travel didn't need to be explained because a story was being told instead.
