Following the leak of an international trailer in late March, STX Entertainment has released the first official trailer for their upcoming disaster thriller Greenland, which was directed by Ric Roman Waugh (Angel Has Fallen; Shot Caller) and stars Gerard Butler (Angel Has Fallen; 300) and Primetime Emmy-nominee Morena Baccarin (DeadpoolGotham) in the lead roles.

The film's plot is fairly straight forward as a man named John Garrity (Butler) is forced to find a way to protect his family after a comet drops down on Earth, completely leveling some of our planet's biggest cities in the process. Their journey will ultimately lead them toward a possible safe haven, but actually getting there will be much easier said than done as the world falls into complete chaos.

Greenland was initially announced back in 2018 with Neill Blomkamp (District 9; Elysium) directing and Chris Evans (Avengers: EndgameCaptain America) starring, but that iteration was scrapped in early 2019 when Blomkamp exited the project.

In addition to Butler and Baccarin, the supporting cast consists of Scott Glenn (Daredevil; The Bourne Ultimatum), Andrew Bachelor (Coffee & Kareem; When We First Met), David Denman (Power Rangers; The Office), Gary Weeks (Spider-Man: Homecoming; Jurassic World) and newcomer Roger Dale Floyd (Doctor Sleep; Stargirl).

Greenland is currently set to hit theaters on August 14, but that date is likely subject to change depending on the future status of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Butler gets a lot of flack for starring in below average, generic actioners, but the dude is still a decent actor. He was on fire in the Ralph Fiennes' Shakespeare adaptation, 'Corolianus'

@GothamSon - I do believe he has good performances in him. It's just that it seems like for the most part he either doesn't get more demanding acting jobs or he actively avoids them.

@GothamSon - my thoughts exactly, specially regarding that movie.

I dont get it. He's a cool dude, and a great actor, but seems to mostly pick bad movies...

Its ironic that Greenland is the name of the film, given that Greenland the country is where the Younger Dryas Climate Catastrophe hypothesis comes from.

Doesn't look too bad I'll catch it on Netflix.

I wish a movie like this would go full on dark. You know have the earth killer actually cause the extinction of every living thing on earth.

I see nothing wrong with this movie. Movie looks enjoyable and thrilling, and it doesn't look like one of Emmerich's CGI fetishes. The last Butler action movie was a true disaster and travesty of a film, so hope this is as good as it looks and is more like other Butler films.

I think another element of this film that is appealing is that it seems to be pretty realistic and grounded in today's America. This is exactly the kind of disaster with an incompetent government that leads to the deaths of countless innocent civilians that would be possible today. So that sense of realism ups the thrill factor a little imo.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Just about every politician in the history of the world would run first to safety and worry about others later. It’s why this is always believable in these types of movies. Plus every government has an evacuation plan for the command structure and the population second.

@patgreyc - I reckon the governments of the world already know its coming, but they are feeding lies to the population to avoid panic and civil unrest.
