Guess Which 2011 Oscar Nominee Was Considered For The STAR TREK 2 Villain Role?

The Oscar nominated actor was considered for the coveted villain role in JJ Abrams' Star Trek sequel, but a commitment to star in his little brother's play kept him out of the mix.

Mexican actor Demian Bichir is probably best known for his Best Actor nomination for his sensational performance in "A Better Life." You will most likely see him next in Robert Rodriguez's "Machete Kills" which is a sequel to "Machete." While covering that news, Variety's Jeff Sneider shared an intriguing bit of Star Trek 2 scoopage.

Sources told Variety late last year that director J.J. Abrams had expressed interest in casting Damien Bichir as the villain in "Star Trek 2," but the actor had already committed to starring in a Mexican stage production of "Swimming With Sharks" that his younger brother Bruno was directing. Bichir had already delayed his participation in the play to topline "A Better Life" and recur on Showtime's "Weeds," so rather than bailing for another major Hollywood film, he stayed true to his word and honored his commitment to his brother.

The role is now in the hands of Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch, but Bichir shouldn't feel too bad since he wasn't the only actor to pass on the role. If you'll remember Benicio del Toro ("Wolfman") was offered the role originally, and then a handful of actors were considered until JJ set his phasers on Cumberbatch.

It's interesting that JJ had such a strong interest in Latin American actors for the part, and one must consider that as a clue to whom the villain will most likely be. Cough...Khan...cough...cough.

"Star Trek 2" stars Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, John Cho and Alice Eve. The film is expected to be in theaters May 17, 2013.

Why he didnt cast Naveen Andrews if they want Khan. He would have been awesome.

I cant see Ben in that role at all. He screams Gary Mitchell to me.

I wanted a new villain. I mean, I'm fine with Khan, but I invite newly created characters. All that matters now is the fact that we got Benedict Cumberbatch as the villain!

Could they possibly get Khan right? It's almost impossible to fathom.

I'm tired of khan. Douchebag already was the main villain of one of THE BIGGEST DAMN TREK AND NOT JUST TREK BUT ONE OF THE BIGGEST SCIFI FILMS PERIOD. Abrams is an asscake. Why not give a villain a shot, like one of those that haven't been in a movie? Or why not do what he did with the last one and MAKE UP a brand new baddie. I hate how they make it seem like EVERYTHING depends on Khan. [frick]ing bullshit. I mean they are bringing back Nimoy AND rehashing khan, these new Trek films MUST stand on their own feet.

Just like Snyder rehashing Zod, Abrams is rehashing Khan.

[frick] originality I guess

@nailbiter- Sorry for my hella long rant bro. Just tired of rehashes.

Khan's story has already been told. I saw him in Space Seed, then TWOK I even read the comicbook- "Khan: Ruling in Hell" which told the story of what happened between the events of "Space Seed" and "Wrath of khan" it talked alllllll about his struggle to survive on Ceta Alpha whatever, it talked about his love life with the starfleet traitor chick, it depicted his reason for going totally nuts.

Look my basic point is- Khan's story has already been told. I honestly feel like the only people chanting for Khan to be the villain are either idiots who never actually watched trek and only cheer for Khan because they are idiotic "sheep" and it's suddenly the popular thing to love khan, or they just don't seem to mind uncreative rehashes.

I do not hate khan. Like I said, I grew up watching khan and am accustomed through both the shows, movies AND even the comics about his life. But look, this new Trek universe SHOULD stand on its own two feet.

And as nailbiter put it- Abrams is a fool because by using Khan, Abrams is opening up a can of worms and people will unendingly compare this movie with TWOK so in the end, it will be a losing battle for Abrams.

[frick] Abrams. I'm done. I wanted something outstanding and worth the 4 year wait...4 years and we're getting KHAN??? Biggest [frick]ing slap to the face.

@TheRedHood- See, you are one of those sheep I was talking about. Khan is no Joker. You are reiterating what some stupid ass blogging sites deem Khan as. Khan was a villain who popped up twice and died. Joker has been with Batman FOREVER, reason being- Batman and Joker NEED each other. They are yin and yang. One comicbook, Batman was gone, I think people thought he died. Joker went crazier than usual and actually ended up turning normal. Without Batman there can be NO JOKER. Kirk and Khan do not share that relationship. People r just so [frick]ing obsessed with trying to compare rivalries they miss the defining differences.

I know a million khanspirators are going to attack me for speaking the truth, that is fine.

Gee I wonder what villain will be in Abrams 3rd trek, why not bring Nero back to life from the 2009 film and REHASH him. Since OBVIOUSLY Abrams is out of ideas

Call me crazy, but I'd like to see an Indian actor play Khan.

But I'm hoping this isn't Khan in the new movie so much as "inspired by Khan." Maybe another Eugenics War superhuman?
