A I Am Legend prequel is in development for release in 2011.

Heres the info:

Director Francis Lawrence has confirmed there will be an I Am Legend prequel that will reveal what happened to Will Smith's character before the zombies took over New York City.

Blog site Shock Til You Drop spoke with Lawrence during his attendance at San Diego Comic-Con about the prequel rumours, and he revealed he would definitely be involved.

"Yes, yes, absolutely, we're actually trying to crack that [the prequel]," he said. "We're trying to figure out some ideas for it, but yes, it would be a prequel."

He apparently also confirmed that Will Smith would definitely be into doing more with the character, and revealed his directorial vision for the prequel.

"In the prequel, it's slightly different because it's earlier [than I Am Legend]. We were three years later so we did a lot of research into the way nature would have sort of overtaken the city, with the cracks in the streets and the weeds, so if it's just back earlier, it'll be slightly different so the approach will be different."

So we will just have to wait and see how it is.

Ozy out.

Ahhhh come on the first one was crap lol. Well okay, okay but a lil stupid! ; D

This isn't even a comic book movie?

Well apart from the superman vs batman cool poster in the first one lol.

Good work though @ OZY! It looks like though WILL needs money with this and HANCOCK 2.

The First I am Legend blew chunks, and a prequel is just beating a dead horse. Especially since THERE IS NO PREQUEL in the book! Even in the book it's all flashbacks, and they KILLED the book to make thier Will Smith movie. He had no business in that role! None!Waste of money and talent, that could be used on something ENTERTAINING!

What do blue aliens and "Legend" have to do with comics is what I'd like to know? I thought this place was called...(COMICBOOK)movie.com!

That wasn't the "Legend" that I'm familiar with...its a whole different movie!

The movie was ok, I dont see the point in making a second one. What are they going to do show the city before everyone got sick. Ya sounds stupid.

I disagree.

"I am Legend and The Last man on Earth" were possible the closest adaptation to the BOOK "The last man on Earth"....but, Omega Man though it was an alright flick it didnt really follow the book...in fact they had DAY WALKERS....or Braindead mutants.

@ dellamorte1872

In the book the DOG DIES. In the movie the DOG dies. Sound spretty fair to me.

@ Everyone

The only thing that kinda ticked me off about "I am Legend" was the ending....the whole sequence with the bomb?.....The main chracter in the book gets captured by the vampire mutants because this girl who is infected betrays our main character after he befriends her, and tests her blood....only to find out shes a spy. She runs away and gets the vampire mutants to come after him....than they crucify him, I think kind of like they did Jesus (cant remember the ending of the book well). Which is why it would be controversial if they did that in the movie. They hammer his hands and foot to a wooden pole or cross... while he dies there on the cross...

The reason they named the movie "I am legend" is because the concept of the book....Vampires are mythical creatures, and humans were scared of them, but when the whole world gets infected the main character hunts these creatures, experiments on them to find cures (all of subjects die), and becomes THEIR MONSTER. He is practically a legend, a villian, an antagonist in their eyes.....a legendary creature since hes the only one of his kind left. While he gets murdered in the book....he yells "I know what the cure is....I am the cure"....but they kill him anyways.

READ THE DAMN BOOK...instead of smashing the movie... The movie was fairly good....alot better than Omega Man.

@ wulf, if they went back and did the book justice that would be awesome, as far as a prequel, they explained it in the flashbacks so there's no need to re explain, if the studio's money is burning a hole in their pocket, re-boot it and show why neville was the legend, and how great this story really was

There were things I liked about the I Am Legend movie. Will Smith was one. It's a good idea for a movie, but other than that yeah it pretty much sucked.

Maybe a prequel will be better.

God did i hate that damn movie!!! LEEE's right the "only" good part of that movie was seeing the Superman VS. Batman billboard.

Probably cause i've never been a zombie fan. If the zomibe film doesn't have a shitload of tits in it, i hate it. I was sold in thinking it was "something" that made will the last person in town. Didn't know it was zombies. When i saw it, it totally killed what i thought was already dead.

Sorry to be a pooper. Ozy, i've always wanted an x-box JUST for Fable. So Fable 3 is good news to me... alot more than this prequel to a death. But i have a PS3 so i won't be playing it :(

I like the concept of Zombies. Its allegorical of todays social climate! LOL

the dog dying was the turning point of the movie, he lost the will to live after that.

i enjoyed the first, but i don't see myself bothering with a prequel...i mean seriously, is it going to be him in a lab the whole time?? no thanks.

Apart from the ending i actually really enjoyed 'I am Legend'!!!

This is great news OZY! Cool article! :)

After (SPOILER) - Robert Neville died - (END SPOILER) I didnt think we'd ever see a follow up - a prequel should be pretty cool! I just hope they bring the dog back - Im not ashamed to admit i cried a little when (SPOILER) - the dog died - (END SPOILER) lol!! ;)

In the book, they're vampires, not zombies. There's a whole bunch of exposition on the science behind why vampires are allergic to sunlight, garlic, religious totems, etc. He's also just a regular working class guy that goes to the library and researches everything he can to learn about blood and the diseases that can affect it. He's not a government sponsored scientist like the movie. I didn't mind that they changed little things like making him a black guy instead of English-Germanic descent or taking place in New York instead of L.A., but they changed EVERYTHING from the book to the movie. Literally. Everything. Why would someone want to take everything that made the book a classic, cool, exciting piece of literature and change it? Do yourselves a favor: If you haven't seen the movie yet, skip it (and this bullshit prequel nonsense). Read the book instead. There's also a fairly faithful graphic novel adaptation of the book for those of you who like to look at pretty pictures while you read;) The book is empowering. The movie is shit.

This is just me but id say that they were more vampires then zombies. Seruiously think about, they come out at night, and In the fight scene at the end of the movie one of the Zombie/Vampires tries biting Will Smith on the neck and they were pretty smart for zombies usually zombies are pretty dumb lol but thats just what i think

I really liked the first one, though I'm not interested in a prequel, I really don't see the point.
