Josh Trank Replaced As Director Of Sony's SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS

Shadow of the Colossus has been in development since 2009, and while Chronicle director Josh Trank was attached to helm the adaptation of the PlayStation 2 game, it appears as if his commitment to a Star Wars spin-off has stopped that. Who's taking over? Read on for details...

Sony Pictures have turned to Andrés Muschietti (Mama) to direct the highly anticipated big screen adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus. No reason has been given for Trank's departure from the project, but you have to imagine that it has something to do with him helming one of Disney and Lucasfilm's Star Wars spin-off movies (and possibly even a sequel to The Fantastic Four). For those of you unfamiliar with the video game which has sold over 2.7 million copies since being released in 2009, it is described as being, "Set in an epic-scale world filled with mythic giants and disembodied spirits, the story will follow a young man attempting to save his lost love by accomplishing a seemingly impossible task… the destruction of the colossi who roam the forbidden land." Seth Lochhead has been tapped to pen the script which Muschietti will oversee the development of. "We knew we had our director once we heard Andy’s take on the material – it was genius," said Sony's Michael De Luca today. "The themes, characters and supernatural elements of the story have incredible international appeal with fans of the game in the millions."

Trank's Star Wars will have no mention of Jedis and The Force will never be referred to as The Force and the storm troopers will not wear uniforms and it will focus on how Han and Leia and Chewy and Luke all met when they were angst-ridden teenagers. It will also be dark and gritty.

Amazing game...

...Hope we get an equally amazing movie...

Which I doubt we will...

...But we will see about that...

Yes we will...

...We will see about that

I cannot really see this one be a great movie, that does justice to the games, live action or animated. Granted, I have just played it on the PS2 but they haven't been any sequels for this on a while or have i totally missed it?

They have plenty of games of their own IPS that could make great movies instead of this one. This feels like Microsoft would do a movie of Nuts and Bolts since it was a popular game fro the first Xbox, but they have more suiting IPs such as Halo for a movie

A close 2nd to Ocarina of Time for all time favorite game for me. I had more fun playing OoT but SoTC was gorgeous.

Hoping the magic of the game will rub off on the movie and that we can finally get a good video game movie. Wreck-It Ralph doesn't count since that's an original movie not an adaptation of a franchise!

I use to hear about this game all the time. It had good visuals from what I remember but I never got a chance to play it. I might have to pull out the old PS2.

There are some amazing video game stories out there... and Hollywood has ignore them all... Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Splinter Cell, Metal Gear, Dead Space, Fallout, Elder Scrolls etc... but they picked Mario Bros, Doom, Mortal Kombat etc???? Good God people. There are some great stories out there... if games like Bioshock and Mass Effect (for example)could be faithfully adapted, most of the general audience out there wouldn't believe they were created as games...

This was a great game but it would take a special and very patient director to make a good movie out of it. If its just a loud action movie I'll probably pass.

I'm still mad they are making The Last of Us into a movie lol, but I would love a source-accurate Resident Evil adaption

Now THIS is a video game that deserves a movie!

I would love to see this live up to the game. It was so damn epic. The problem with this movie is that it will more than likely get some new plot forced in with side characters and the like by a director that has neither played the game nor understands the story. The thing about SoTC was that it was not a lot of exposition, or back-story to explain what was going on. This gave it an air of mystery, and allowed the player to imagine, and come up with their own ideas of who the characters were and why they did what they did.

@TheGreenCondom

I'm with you on that. The whole point of The Last of Us is that it was a game that felt like a movie. It just won't be as good or groundbreaking as a movie itself. And a Resident Evil film actually based off the games would be good too!

Josh Trank is 30, so there might be a good chance that he played the game.

Amen on that! The whole game was a cinematic experience, trimming it down to a 2 hour movie will feel like a "diet" version of the game lol
