GODZILLA x KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE Ending Explained: Who Dies And How Does It Set Up The MonsterVerse's Future?

With Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire playing in theaters, we can finally get into spoilers!

In the movie, we're introduced to the Skar King, a Kong-like Titan who was trapped in the Hollow Earth by Godzilla years earlier. He's determined to return to the surface world and is controlling Shimo, a creature he plans to use to induce a new Ice Age.

Thanks to Mothra's intervention, Godzilla and Kong put their past differences aside to battle Skar King, though most of Rio de Janeiro is destroyed in the process.

The crystal Skar King uses to control Shimo is destroyed - even Baby Kong lends a helping hand - and she then helps the heroic Titans take down the villain. Frozen solid by Shimo, Skar King is later obliterated by Kong who shatters his remains and puts an end to him once and for all.

As Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ends, Godzilla and Kong go their separate ways but remain frenemies rather than true allies. Kong returns to the Hollow Earth with Shimo and Baby Kong, while Godzilla heads back to Rome where he resumes his nap in the Colosseum in Rome.

The movie's humans all make it out alive and the only noteworthy death is Skar King.

This story is surprisingly standalone in nature and there's nothing that really sets the stage for the MonsterVerse's future. However, while Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire doesn't boast a mid or post-credits scene, Mothra's roar can be heard at the very end of the credits, a hint perhaps that the Queen of the Monsters will get a bigger role next time.

Did you enjoy Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire?

The epic battle continues!  Legendary Pictures' cinematic Monsterverse follows up the explosive showdown of 'Godzilla vs. Kong' with an all-new adventure that pits the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence—and our own. 'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire' delves further into the histories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire stars returning Godzilla vs. Kong actors Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle alongside Dan Stevens (Legion), Alex Ferns (The Batman), and Fala Chen (Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).

The screenplay is by Terry Rossio (Godzilla vs. Kong) and Simon Barrett (You’re Next) and Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight), from a story by Rossio & Wingard & Barrett, based on the character "Godzilla" owned and created by TOHO Co., Ltd.

@Nomis929 - reading Godzilla was napping in the Colosseum was already pretty funny, but seeing an image of it makes it even better. Kinda surprised it fits though

Cool!!.

Ya’ll remember rumors that the next Kong film was being developed as “Son of Kong” and now we seem to have a baby ape that he adopts so makes me think the next one might focus on an older him moreso while the one we have followed since Skull Island might die perhaps?.

Anyway , looking forward to seeing the Skar King and Shimo aswell (who isn’t as much of a villain it seems then I thought it would be).

The CG makes your head hurt, it's almost worse than THE FLASH

Someday we have to talk about what is happening with CGI in Hollywood, it's getting worse and worse

kong will never die and neither will godzilla unless its a destoyah situation where he can pass it on to his son to become the new godzilla like in godzilla 2000
dracula
dracula - 3/29/2024, 1:42 PM
@grif - the Godzilla in Godzilla 2000 isnt the son from hesei

Fun fact, early in development, Godzilla Final War was going to be a sequel to Destroyah. The director decided against it

@grif - they did introduce baby kong, so possible

@dracula - im rusty. i thought that was his son and he absorbed all of the radiation and became the one seen in 2000
dracula
dracula - 3/29/2024, 1:41 PM
Do a solo Kong movie set in hollow earth

Put him against Angurus, Baragon, Varan, King Cesar or Megalon

Do a solo godzilla movie

Put him against Gigan, Biollante or Monster X

For third go full destroy all monsters, with Destroyah as the big bad
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 3/31/2024, 12:18 AM
@dracula - I was thinking about how a solo Kong movie could work titled "KING KONG". I think setting it in Hollow Earth would work but this film established that Kong now has a clan and Shimo. So I think if it's set in Hollow Earth and in NY they could bypass the usage of other titans. The problem with this universe is that Godzilla responds to every single Titan threat that's radiation based or unbalanced to the ecosystem. So having it stand alone is hard without a concrete explanation as to why Godzilla is MIA.

BEAT GODZILLA 2014. FRIDAY AM: Godzilla x Kong: New Empire made $10M in previews according to Warner Bros– the best ever for Legendary Monsterverse beating the first film in the series, 2014’s Godzilla which did $9.3M. As we told you last night, the audience score on this is high.

It’s a really fun, creature feature with a lot of heart; heck it’s even better than Jurassic World: Dominion. Seriously.

This morning tracking firm Quorum raised their projections for the movie on the high end to $61M.

Good Friday is always a big box office day, so we’ll see where this takes Warners. Per ComScore, 77% of K-12 schools are on break today along with 39% colleges out. Monday after Easter also looks great with 57% K-12 schools off and 14% colleges.

Someone here once said Godzilla vs Kong was to Thor Ragnarok as Godzilla x Kong is to Thor Love and Thunder. After watching it, this statement is kind of accurate.

SonOfAGif - 3/31/2024, 12:20 AM
@Arthorious - Godzilla X Kong had way better CGI and arguably a better storyline. Godzilla vs. Kong was all over the place in my opinion and Mecha Godzilla was extremely rushed.
