Get ready for the rematch of the century as Deadline is reporting that Legion and Beauty and the Beast star Dan Stevens has joined the cast of Warner Bros. and Legendary's upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong sequel in the lead human role.
His casting reunites Stevens with Adam Wingard, who directed him in the acclaimed thriller The Guest. Wingard also helmed the previous installment, which grossed over $468.2 million globally on an estimated $155-200 million production budget. It was the highest-grossing film of 2021 worldwide for WB and the studio's second-highest domestically, behind Dune.
The film's huge performance was twice as impressive since it also debuted day-and-date on HBO Max and was actually one of the few major titles to find simultaneous streaming and box office success despite WB's controversial release model.
With Stevens leading the sequel, it seems the studio may be seeking to bring some fresh blood into the franchise, although we wouldn't rule out the possibility of some combination of Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Brian Tyree Henry, Julian Dennison, Kaylee Hottle and/or Kyle Chandler also coming back for Round 2 of Godzilla vs. Kong.
No word on a release date just yet, but with production slated to begin fairly soon, a Summer 2023 or Early 2024 release seems very much in the cards.
