GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS - First Reactions Tease "The Most Entertaining American Kaiju Movie" Ever

While May this year is very crowded when it comes to Summer blockbusters, Godzilla: King of the Monsters has risen above the competition with a slew of fantastic trailers. Building up anticipation for a colorful, outrageously fun sequel, director Mike Dougherty seems to have an uniquely epic experience in store for fans.

While it is still a few weeks until the sequel's release, Legendary and Warner Bros. seem to be very happy with how it turned out, lifting its social media embargo around twenty days early. Here's what a few critics and fans had to say about the anticipated kaiju flick:

But of course, practical effects would've been better, right?
CG is always horrible right?

If it wasn't obvious, I'm being sarcastic and the above is a dig at the 'CG is always horrible' crowd.

@Murdock857859 - agree, although it is sometimes over used and in some cases practicle effects are better, look at the Hobbit orcs compared to Lord Of The Rings. There has to be some middle ground

OFF TOPIC:

So I just came out of an early premiere screening of Brightburn and here are some spoiler-free thoughts I thought I'd share.

The movie is decent, not great.

For better or worse, it's exactly what it was advertised as, the origin of what is essentially an evil Superman.

The positives are that they do stick to the terror that an evil superpowered kid could wreck and to that end, they go all out with the concept. I did enjoy the parallels this film drew with Zack Snyder's take on Superman. In fact, the way super-speed is portrayed here is virtually identical to how it's shown in Snyder's DC movies. If this movie hits, I can't imagine DC going ahead with that particular effect for future Superman movies (if there are any )

Furthermore, the performances are good, some of the scares are effective, there are some moments that are darkly humorous and the cinematography can be pretty great at times actually.

The biggest negative for this film is the lack of any real depth to the characters, their development and the pacing. While pacing in criticism is generally used to describe a film dragging, it's the opposite here. Everything happens very quickly, one moment after the other and scenes, aside from the jump scare moments (of which there are a few) don't really breathe. They're quick to get the message across and shift to the next jumpscare moment, which sounds great but is executed quite awkwardly.

It really is quite forgettable. I'd actually drop my final score down to a 5/10.

@Murdock857859 - there is something i wonder about this movie.

superman behing a kind and awesome super hero is the result of good parenting by pa and ma kent.

so what exactly is the deal with that kid ? is there a good reason he is becoming evil ? parents in the trailer looked like decent people.

i hope it's not just a few bullies because that would be lazy writting

@lord22 - I'm afraid that's exactly why..

@lord22 - Actually, the way they go with it is even lazier imo. In fact, I would've welcomed it if he turns out evil because of how horrible his upbringing is given that it then raises the 'nature vs nurture' question which is interesting. But here,(SPOILERS AHEAD) his parents are basically alt universe versions of Pa and Ma kent and only really turn on Brandon when he goes completely irredeemable. He basically becomes evil because of the ship he landed in emitting a signal that sort of 'activates' him. Until that point, he's actually a good kid.

@Murdock857859 - That's disappointing. Maybe they should have gone in a more 'Carrie' sort of direction.

Remember seeing the extended preview in IMAX before Endgame, I looked over to my brother, and he looked over to me, and we both knew we'd Book tickets in IMAX.

@NotoriousWolf23 - Why IMAX? This movie wasn't made with IMAX unlike Avengers: Endgame.

Go see it in Dolby Cinema. Has better colors and sound.

The digital imax is still underwhelming compared to 70mm IMAX.

Wish Marvel would switch it up sometimes and use film.

My wife is gonna be ticked when I buy a 70 inch 4K T.V. just to watch this movie on Blu-ray (I don't even buy Blu-ray any more, but I'll make an exception here) and sit real close to the T.V
just to pretend I'm at IMAX watching it, since I won't be anywhere I can enjoy this flick in a GD movie theater this year...long run on sentence rant over. Go Go GODZILLA!!!! Glad the early reviews look good!

I actually enjoyed Godzilla 2014 but I certainly can understand why many ppl didn't. However, I adored every trailer I've seen for Godzilla: KOTM because it looks like a Godzilla fan's dream. I'm kinda heartbroken that because of the previous film's reception this one is tracking to open VERY low considering the budget; I wish the opposite was true and 2014 opened to 55 million and 2019's godzilla managed to double that. Oh well.

I had no problem with the screen time Godzilla had in the last movie. It was sold more to be about the people anyway and they often said they wanted it to build up your anticipation to see him in his full glory at the end which I think worked great. The only issue I had was the human story they sold us on was Bryan Cranston’s character, and that’s not the human story we got.
