BOX OFFICE: KONG: SKULL ISLAND Kicks Off North American Run With Solid $3.7 Million On Thursday

Kong: Skull Island has now kicked off its North American box office run, but just how high will it go this weekend and how well does it compare to 2014's Godzilla? Find out after the jump...

Variety reports that Kong: Skull Island debuted with $3.7 million in Thursday night previews, a solid result for the movie which follows Godzilla as part of the "MonsterVerse" Warner Bros. is setting up. As of right now, early estimates are pointing to an opening weekend in the range of $45 million to $50 million. Interestingly, that $3,7 million is well below Logan's $9.5 million the same time last week.

It's going to be an interesting few days for Kong: Skull Island as the movie also opens in 65 international markets this weekend, so we'll quickly find out just how successful this new franchise will be.

Chances are it will take the #1 spot, though with Logan eyeing a second-weekend haul of $40 million to $45 million, it could be a close race. Worryingly, Kong: Skull Island is way behind Godzilla's $9.3 million from Thursday night screenings back in 2014, not to mention it's three-day cume of $93.1 million. Luckily, the "MonsterVerse" has Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong up next.

What are you guys planning on watching this weekend? Be sure to let us know in the usual place.

@MovieMonster1 - I haven't seen Godzilla yet, but from the trailers I've seen, it's dark and moody.

Kong is a manic film, with a wild soundtrack and Apocalypse Now colors

It's extremely fun, with a dash of manic weirdness.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts is a class act.

He's bringing the weird into blockbusters.

Plus, John C Reilly is the standout. He's absolutely phenomenal
