With the simultaneous ceremonies scheduled to be held February 17th in Los Angeles and New York, the nominees for the Writers Guild Awards have officially been announced. Most of the nominations aren't very surprising, but in the "Original Screenplay" category, director Rian Johnson's script for his critically acclaimed sci-fi thriller Looper has received a nod. The film, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis, has been campaigning for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards. Fingers crossed that the script will be nominated for an Oscar.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Flight, written by John Gatins; Paramount Pictures
Looper, written by Rian Johnson; TriStar Pictures
The Master, written by Paul Thomas Anderson; The Weinstein Co.
Moonrise Kingdom, written by Wes Anderson & Roman Coppola; Focus Features
Zero Dark Thirty, written by Mark Boal; Columbia Pictures

Additionally, Ang Lee's Life Of Pi has been nominated for "Adapted Screenplay", alongside other candidates such as Steven Spielberg's Lincoln and Ben Affleck's Argo. For the full list on that and "Documentary Screenplay", click the source link below.

Tough choice, it should be between looper and zero dark thirty in my opinion. I think zero dark thirty will win for obvious reasons.

YES! Lets Hope Looper Wins :) that movie was great, nicely written, and wonderfully done.

@SuperDude001 I think Johnson should direct the whole new trilogy :p

@Parker2017 - He should stay the hell away from that shambles called Star Wars, he's far too good to waste his talents regurgitating franchises for braindead cinema. He's an auteur, he's written and directed all his movies and all three have been excellent. People like him are the last bastion of real creativity while the rest of Hollywood simply spew out remakes, prequels and sequels of the same stupid action movie templates.

Great News, well deserved!

But soon the comments will come on how someone thinks Dredd was a better film because it had lots of people getting shot.

It deserves an Oscar nomination in my opinion. The last spot is going to be between this and Flight. (others are The Master, Moonrise Kingdom, Zero Dark Thirty and Django Unchained)

Looper was very predictable, but just my opinion. How was it original?

@rothwilder: so a future where time travel is invented but illegal and your future self going back to stop your younger self from being killed by killing a child who'll grow up to be the Looper exterminator is NOT original? Okay.

Please do Cowboy Bebop next... he's a fan, and he had the perfect elements in Looper that he could make a film.

What about the Dark Knight Rises? It didn't follow the comics in any way.

@Reasonnnn: Let us not forget the ending where the younger Joe Simmons kills himself, in order to stop his older self from killing this would-be looper-exterminator... ;); *cool*/P :)
