Lost: Episode 6:05 The Lighthouse

Bit late with this one folks! Here's my thoughts on this Jack centric fifth episode of the finale season...

As the final season roles along we have had some pretty good episodes that were sort of kinda a little bit let down by the new "flash sideways" gimmick stories. For any non Losties reading, thats the alternate universe created when Juliette detonated the Atom bomb..clear? Thought so! Anyway this ep is no different..very good island exploits...not so good on the old LA multiverse.

Island:

Jacob appears to Hurley again and tells him that he and Jack must go to the lighthouse(yes, there was a lighthouse on the island all along..guess it was hiding). He gives Hurley a list of instructions which he writes on his arm. Meanwhile Jack seems to be finding a bit of common ground with Dogan(thats his name isn't it?) so Hurley expresses to Jacob that he may not go along too willingly. Jacob tells him to tell Jack "He has what it takes"..a clear reminder to Jack that his father constantly reminded him that he had NOT got what it took. Yes folks, once again Lost is back in its favorite territory..the Daddy issues. But more on that later. So jack and Hurley set off for the lighthouse. On the eay they run into Kate who is determined to find Claire, stop by the caves and see Adam And Eve(Is it Rose and Bernard? I haven't a clue) and engage in a bit of old times banter as Hurley recalls how cool it is to be travelling through the jungle with his buddy again. This is what makes Hurley such a great character and really Lost such a great show. Friendships are never lost sight of or sacrificed for other plot devices which so often happens in other shows of this type. Of course Jack has a bit on his mind and isn't too forthcoming with the nicey nicey, although he does reveal to Hurley his reason for returning to the island. He was "broken, and he thought this place would put him back together". Anyway, when they get to the lighthouse they see a strange dial with mirrors attached and all of the surviving characters names on it and the dead one names crossed off..just like in Jacob's cave last episode. As Hurley turns the dial Jack gets a glimpse of something in one of the mirrors and tells Hurley to reset it to his number(remember the infamous numbers represent Jack, Hurley, Sawyer, Sayid, Locke and Jin. He then sees in the mirror the house he grew up in and freaks out demanding Hurley tells him what Jacob wants from him and why he was watching him since he was a kid. Hurley doesn't know so Jack being Jack smashes the [frick]ing mirrors instead of examining the dial to see if he could find out any more information. Baby. Jacob then turns up and reveals to Hugo that it was what he wanted to happen all along..the smug git. I am really not liking Jacob..part of me actually liked Un-Locke more. He also tells him that the temple is under attack from Un-Locke and thats why he wanted to get he and Jack far away..but isn't Sayid also a "candidate"? Anyway, Jacob doesn't seem to give a shit about our favorite torturer too much.
The sub story on the island is Jin and bat shit crazy Claire. She questions her captive Other about the whereabouts of her son and even when Jin reveals that Kate took him she still kills him with an axe! A new one for Lost. Jin then pretend she was lying and that they do indeed have Aron inside the temple. Just then Claire's "friend" shows up. Its Un-Locke..the plot thickens!

Alternate Verse..place.

Ok, so this version of Jack has a son named David. David is just as distant with Jack as Jack was with his father. Turns out David can play the piano really well and thought Jack's expectations were always too high, and that if he told him he would be disappointed with his performance..just like Christian was with Jack see? So Jack goes to see him play and realizes that he is acting just like his dad did when he was a kid. That it. Stuff we already knew about a character that may not even exist! Or if he does, its not the Jack we have been following all these years so who gives a shit? These flash sideways really better be going somewhere is all I can say. Oh there was one interesting thing, Jack notices his appendix scar in the mirror and doesn't seem to remember getting it. He asks his mother and she says he had it out when he was very young. Jack then seems to recall it. Of course we know that Jack..our Jack..island jack, only got the scar on the island. So this suggests that maybe these are not separate, alternate timeline characters, but actually the result of a split consciousness..kind of like what used to happen with Desmond. His mind would be in one place but his body in another. Anyway, just my theory. I hope its something like that. The idea of elseworld characters meeting up with the island ones or something is pretty ridiculous to me.

All in all a very good ep..but I'm still a bit frustrated by whats may happen with the flash sideways..guess we better have faith. No choice!

Oh and Whose name corresponds to the all-important number 108 on the lighthouse dial? Well, it could be Penny or Charles Widmore, Walt, or Desmond. But since the name written on the dial is “Wallace,” maybe it’s a character we haven’t met yet?

Ror great overview. I really have enjoyed Lost and I'm glad this last season has me sorta lost all over again. However I agree, the flash sideways parts lacking so far.

I like the flash sideways. They have all kinds of little clues about what is going on. It's clearly not an alternate time line created by the detonation since jack is having de ja vu such as the deal with his appendix scar. What happened on the island happened, it wasn't aveted by the explosion. Also in 1977 Ben was already on the island and in the atl he is off island as a school teacher. It is an alternate reality but i don't think it was caused by the detonation. But then again Juliet did say it worked so who knows. Dammit!!!!!!! They said the answers were coming and all I have are more questions. Fcking bullshit!!!

P.s. 108 was indeed Wallace, but it was also crossed out so i don't know what that means. It should mean the person is either dead or no longer a candidate so don't know why he would need to come back but who knows. My belief is it's Desmond, but who the fck knows.

yeah but juliet said something to sawyer before she died about having him invite her for coffee again. i believe that was her mind flashing to the other reality. if she is jacks wife why would she be having coffee with sawyer. and even though jack is divorced, we know shes not with sawyer becasue he was on the plane alone and looking to scam hurley. the odds of juliets ex-husband (jack) and current boyfriend (sawyer) being on the same plane coming back from australia are pretty high. but could be juliet, could be his original wife, could be someone completely different, and could be that they will never tell us. again who the fck knows.

Nice write up bro.

The fact that Desmond briefly appears on the plane and suddenly disappears def gave me the feeling that the "split consciousness" theory is right on the money. Jack's bleeding neck, his appendix scar, Claire knowing Aaron's name at the hospital, all signs point to this "flash sideways" being more of an island generated view of what could have been, rather than an alternate reality that is actually happening. I understand what you mean about that storyline needing to pay-off, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now. After all they've earned it! ;)

I am begginging to get the fear though... the BSG fear ^_^

it reminds me of that x-files episode where some mountain slime made people think they were in an alternate reality while it was feeding on them, then stuff woudl happen like slime on a towel and blood on an arm that made them think something was wrong. i think its something like that. not a slime creature, but deinately and mental reality and not a real one.

The lighthouse was tight though.

So Jacob had picked these numbers, these people, how long ago? The numbers were being broadcast from the island since before Rousseau's team got there. At what point did Jacob put these numbers together as his candidates? Locke is at least 20 years older than Hurley. The rest are around the same age range, the previously mentioned two being the high and low. It couldn't have been until after Hurley was born (late 1970's?) but before Rousseau's team landed in 1980. I want more explanation of these numbers I've been fkn obsessing over for the past 5 years. The names and the degrees on the dial are cool, but it's not enough.

What about Claire? She seems to be becoming the Rousseau character. Missing child, crazy, setting traps. Even their appearance is similar. Was Rousseau connected to the smoke monster like Claire is to SM/Un-Locke?

Claire and Rousseau both came to the island pregnant, gave birth on the island and had thier child taken. There's definately gonna be a connection there.

There definately better be more explanation to the numbers other than "Jacob had a thing for numbers"........tha doesn't explain shit.

i dont think russoaes daughter was supposed to be taken. i recall in that episode she was supposed to be killed along with rouesseau by ben. ben chose to keep her instead, and they let him do it cause he was destined to be their leader. maybe im remembering it wrong but i dont think she was being taken for anyone.

I'm just thinking out loud here, but what if Jacob is actually the bad guy, or villain, of the story and the MIB/SmokeMonster is actually the good guy. After all, Jacob gave orders to the 'others' which included killing the dharma people as well as kidnapping children.

alot of people think theres gonna be this big switcheroo......quite frankly i dont think they represent good and evil. i think they represent something else. the eternal struggle has always been between people who believe the island is special and people who just want to leave. lock vs jack, jacob vs smoke monster, etc........therefore i think it will be something more like faith vs science, destiny vs free will....not specifically good vs evil. they have both obviously dont very bad things over the course of the show as far as manipulating and killing people. could go either way.

My theroy is that it's just a never ending game between two sides and a victor is decided according to the rules that they must follow. Once the game is won, it starts all over again.

It would be kinda ironic if all the serious drama was made to seem pointless, though i think most would hate that kind of ending.

I really hope that enougth is left to guess work, the intesting asspect of Lost for me is there are no easy answers!
