I know I'm a bit late but there have been alot of movies coming out this summer, so it's kind of hard to see them every week. Well, I finally caught up with movie and I wanted to see what all of the positive reviews were about. I had my expectations high when I went to go see this movie, also because I liked Star Trek which Abrams also directed.
Super 8 takes place in the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth - something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.
Joel Courtney who stars in the film really impressed me with his acting as Joe. I honestly wouldn't mind seeing this kid in another movie. Elle Fanning did a good job also. Kyle Chandler gave a decent performance, he was just playing the role of a strict father and he did it well. As for the rest of the actors, they all gave fine peformances. None of them really stood out but they did decent jobs overall. The CGI in the movie was spot-on, although in some scenes it did look terrible. Now onto the stuff I didn't like about this movie. For one thing, it seemed like another Goonies movie but with a alien instead. Also, the pacing was off in the movie. And as far as the monster goes? Way to be original Abrams. The monster looked exactly like the one from
Cloverfield. Only difference was it wasn't as big. And the train crash is just silly. No way a small pickup truck can derail a huge train like the one in the movie, especially a huge one that's in this film. And how did the guy who crashed the truck into the train live, especially when he hit the thing head on?
Aside from what I just mentioned
Super 8 is a decent film. It had so much potential but it's just so un-original. Next time Abrams, give us a original monster will you? Overall, a decent popcorn flick.
