It's the day after the original Pink Ranger Amy Jo Johnson's birthday and to commemorate the occassion, Lionsgate & Saban Entertainment have revealed who will be harnessing the "Pterodactyl" dinozord powers and becoming the new Pink Ranger in their upcoming Dean Israelite-directed Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reboot.

After an extensive search, the studios announced today that Naomi Scott has been cast as Kimberly Ann Hart a.k.a. the Pink Ranger, beating out the rumored competition of AnnaSophia Robb (The Way Way Back) and Stefanie Scott (Chuck). The new Kimberly will be an updated version of the "valley girl" that fans of the hit '90s series are familiar with, with a recent report describing her as:

Kimberly – 17 years old, unconventionally cool all in a way the popular girls wish they were. In fact, she was one of those girls, but isn’t anymore. Not since she’s returned to school after an absence of 6 months. Rumors are flying as to why; rumors she seems not to care about, because she’s come back with this new rebel-without-a-cause, edgy attitude. But the truth is, it’s all masking a deep secret that makes her feel profoundly vulnerable.

The 22-year-old Naomi Scott most recently appeared in Ridley Scott's critically acclaimed The Martian, which stars Matt Damon (Bourne 5) in the lead, and also had a starring role on Fox's short-lived sci-fi series Terra Nova.

With the first Ranger cast, expect to start hearing news on the other four much sooner than later, especially with January 2016 as the expected production start date. A recent report revealed that K.J. Apa (Shortland Street), Mitchell Hope (The Descendants), and Austin Butler (The Shannara Chronicles) were finalists for 'Jason, the Red Ranger' and that Daniel Zovatto (It Follows), Ross Butler (Chasing Life), and Brian 'Sene' Marc (Nerve) were in the running for 'Zack, the Black Ranger.' No word yet on the Blue or Yellow Rangers.

What do you guys think of Scott's casting? Sound off with your thoughts below!

After 10,000 years of imprisonment, the evil sorceress Rita Repulsa and her loyal minions are freed when astronauts on a routine mission in space accidentally open her dumpster prison on the Moon. A team of “five teenagers with attitude” — Jason, Zack, Kimberly, Billy and Trini — receive superpowers beyond their wildest dreams so they can defend the Earth as the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
