REBEL MOON Star Ed Skrein Reveals Zack Snyder's Unique Pitch As The Filmmaker Talks STAR WARS Comparisons

Rebel Moon director Zack Snyder has opened up on being freed from the Star Wars franchise's restrictions while making his new sci-fi epic, while Ed Skrein reveals the filmmaker's unique R-Rated pitch.

Shortly after Disney acquired Lucasfilm, Zack Snyder pitched a Star Wars movie that, now, has become Netflix's Rebel Moon.

While it sounds like Kathleen Kennedy seriously considered moving forward with the Watchmen and 300 helmer's pitch, Snyder was busy with his DCEU movies. It's likely the response to those played a role in why his Star Wars project fell by the wayside, though many of Lucasfilm's spin-off plans fell by the wayside, regardless.

Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire and Rebel Moon: Part Two - The Scargiver. are now on the way, though it's clear the sci-fi franchise has been inspired by Star Wars (there are even lightsabers!).

Talking to Den of Geek (via SFFGazette.com), star Ed Skrein reflected on how Snyder pitched the movies to him: "Zack told me, 'It’s like Star Wars but with violence, sex, and swearing.'" Sounds fun, right?

The filmmaker, who will also release an R-Rated "Snyder Cut," adds: "Star Wars' fanbase basically aged with the movies, and then they had children that then also became fans of the movies, and their children had children who became fans of the movie."

"I do understand the love of Star Wars, how canonized it is...and actually how immobile it is. That’s why I’m here now doing Rebel Moon the way I’m doing it, because we really have no rules except for the ones we make."

It's hard to imagine Snyder enjoying the restrictions that would have come with being part of the Star Wars franchise and based on what we saw in the first Rebel Moon trailer, he's been completely unleashed with this two-part sci-fi epic.

When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival.

Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge.

As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.

Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire is set to be released on December 22.

“It’s like Star Wars but with violence, sex, and swearing” Jesus Christ, why do they give this idiot a budget for movies. He’s like a teenage boy with no taste who thinks this is what makes a good movie. Thank god it’s only Netflix willing to bankroll him now.

@John75 - Because whole bunch of people love the things you happen to hate.

@John75 - yes. They do. That is literally the answer to your question, whether you like it or not. If his films fans didnt make some group money, he would keep making movies. Huge budget movies, no less.

You may not like it, but there are people out there who just watch movies because they enjoy them, and arent on the internet 24/7 and to shame every article that supports his work.

Actually, most people on this planet dont care about the Snyder cult shit like a lot of you jokers on here do lol

People go to his movies.

@John75 - so... why then do you think he still makes films with huge budgets? I mean you asked the [frick]ing question, mate.

@TheVandalore - netflix isn’t exactly top of the line stuff and Rebel Moon looks really cheap.

I respect Zack's talent. But he doesn't really think on a deep level, you can sense that from watching his interviews. He's like that athlete with all the talent and physical gifts but has no head for the game between his shoulders. He has no head for story, which is why I'm very weary of this. The trailer looked like one of those fake movie trailers youtubers make where they take random clips from different movies, nothing feels cohesive nor does it seem to have a core idea.

I really, really don't get the Snyder hate. I'm not a fanboy by any means, but I've watched most of his movies - and whilst they have their flaws (the theatrical release of BvS in particular) and can be CGi heavy - for the most part, I've enjoyed them. Man of Steel, Watchmen, 300, Army of the Dead, Justice League Snyder cut, Dawn of the Dead were all enjoyable IMO, even if not 5 star films. He comes across as a nice guy in interviews and actors who've worked with him seem to think highly of him and remain intensely loyal. I can certainly think of Directors who are more of an asshole than him, or who have a larger portfolio of badly received films - yet they get much less flak. I just don't quite understand it; is it just because he made missteps in the superhero genre and fans of those movies are much more obsessive about mistreatments of their characters?

@elgaz - "... is it just because he made missteps in the superhero genre..."

Yes! For me I do not hate Snyder, in fact I would not be opposed to him making a Man of Steel trilogy as long as he does not write the story or screenplay.

I hold him personally responsible for the situation that DC is in because there was a lot of questions being raised when he began the DCEU including replacing Christian Bale for Ben Affleck, rushing the team up instead of going slowly, and casting people like Jesse Eisenberg. He brushed all of those aside because of arrogance and since then rather than own up to mistakes he is always rewriting history to make it seem like it was part of a larger plan...like the fake idea that Swanwick was Martian Manhunter all along. It is those things that are infuriating to me.

Star wars is also a very carefully crafted world. Crafted before the age of CGI so despite its wild setting, it's still a very credible story.

All I see while watching Rebel Moon's trailer, is a succession of cool shots and cool quips that doesn't amount to a tangible story or universe.

I might be wrong though, we'll see.

@Usernametaken - More than likely you're not because Zach Snyder is a mediocre storyteller.

@Kozmik - I like to give people the benefit of the doubt.

I use to love Snyder before BvS. And hey, if Todd Phillips, the director of The Hangover can make The Joker, anything is possible.

It’s just even if you take away all the superhero stuff or sci-fi, the performances, the dialogue and plot justifications are just so amateurish in his films that he can’t generate any feelings for the audience except for cheap looking special effects. The actors in his movies, while great under other directors, come off as about as believable as porn actors. His not an auteur as some like to build him up as, at best he belongs as a commercial or video game director.

''I do understand the love of Star Wars, how canonized it is...and actually how immobile it is. That’s why I’m here now doing Rebel Moon the way I’m doing it, because we really have no rules except for the ones we make.''

That's a great way of understanding it. Just wish Zack realized this with DC. It's like with any pop culture thing: it is so rooted in public consciousness, you'll always get hate no matter what you do as everybody has developed it's own notion of what it should and shouldn't be.
John75
John75 - 8/25/2023, 10:44 AM
@bkmeijer1 - but all he seems to want to do in his movies is put so called spectacle without earning any of it. He doesn’t seem to understand making character, plot and motivation first then you can do the big stuff. Look at BVS, crammed full of moments and imagery from Dark Knight Returns and Death of Superman without any rhyme or reason and earning none of the moments. Because of that, the audience doesn’t give a damn about any of it. He is on every level, a terrible storyteller.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 8/25/2023, 11:10 AM
@John75 - oh yeah, I agree his writing is definitely not his best side.

And him writing moments that feel unearned are even amplified by them being based on big pop culture moments. Had he done an original superhero movie, I think it would've gone over with a lot less criticism.
Kozmik
Kozmik - 8/25/2023, 2:51 PM
@bkmeijer1 - He kinda did, which was why his DCEU was overall a failure. Snyder doesn't respect canon and apparently doesn't understand how things become admired in the first place.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 8/26/2023, 3:59 AM
@Kozmik - I think he does know, he just wanted to do his own thing. And with any pop culture thing, that doesn't go over well. Think it could've worked had he done an original superhero movie.
Kozmik
Kozmik - 8/29/2023, 2:50 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Sure, but the point is Snyder wasn't working with an original superhero movie, he was working with established IP, which he didn't respect. At the end of the day, whether or not he did or didn't understand matters little because the outcome doesn't change.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 8/29/2023, 5:45 PM
@Kozmik - true. It's not a what if, it's just a bad handling of the property. I'll leave out whether he respected it or not

Is it just me or does Zach Snyder's approach to filmmaking come off like a kid who discovered his dad's secret stash of porno magazines?
John75
John75 - 8/25/2023, 3:31 PM
The biggest shame is because of him taking so many key moments from something like Dark Knight Returns it means that it’ll be unlikely we’ll ever see a Elseworld one shot adaptation of it.
