REBEL MOON: Zack Snyder Taps Sofia Boutella To Star In His New Netflix Sci-Fi Project

It was recently announced that Justice League director Zack Snyder's next project for Netflix after Army of The Dead and Army of Thieves will be an epic sci-fi fantasy titled Rebel Moon, and the movie has now found its lead.

Deadline reports that Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond, Atomic Blonde, The Mummy) landed the main role when she "wowed" Snyder after testing along with small group of actresses.

Boutella's character was not named, but according to the synopsis, she'll play a young woman with a mysterious past who seeks out warriors from neighboring planets to help a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy take a stand against the tyrannical Regent Balisarius.

Snyder has often said that if he was given the opportunity to helm a Star Wars movie, he'd pay homage to the great Akira Kurosawa with an epic space adventure inspired by Seven Samurai, and it sounds like he'll get the chance to tell his story in a different galaxy far, far away.

Snyder also co-wrote the project with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, and will produce alongside Deborah Snyder, Wesley Coller for The Stone Quarry.

@regularmovieguy - she is unusually appealing to me. Almost a bit masculine in the face (which I don’t usually go for) but damn is she attractive. Very talented as an actor and dancer too!

Cautiously optimistic now that Sofia is cast. Though i can't shake the feeling this is just another new sci-fi film that will spawn a ton of Funko Pops that will live on Target shelves for years after people have forgotten about it.

@Waddles - yessir. Its Sion Sono so its always gonna push way beyond the envelope. Cage is the least crazy thing in it.

To be honest, it starts to go in circles after a really good first act, but she is great.

There's a scene with a testicle that I won't spoil...Idk how to even explain it lol

@Waddles - Is That the insane looking Nic Cage movie?

I'll second it. It takes a LOT to create a movie where Nic Cage is the least crazy aspect but Sono found a way. I think it's the musical numbers that really push it over the top.

@Waddles - Not joking. Sono created something that is difficult to describe in words without spoilers, and spoilers really would take some of the fun out of it. Like @BlackBeltJones said it loses some steam after the first act but that first act is nuclear crazy.

That’s pretty cool. I think at this point I’m actually more interested in this than Planet of the Dead. I always thought it would have been cool to have him do a Star Wars movie but also don’t want Star Wars continuity beholden to him so this is a perfect balance.

Also even as a resident fan of Snyder movies I have to say Army of Thieves was ass. Just not well done one really any level imo, it’s a heist move where the heists are both not interesting and also don’t really make sense a lot of the time. He really needs to stop writing beyond the top level story beats and concepts because it’s not his strong suit and never has been. Get him a decent writing partner to translate his ideas into something more cohesive and let him go wild with the camera
