According to Coming Soon, Columbia Pictures has set a new release date for director M. Night Shyamalan's sci-fi film After Earth, which stars real life father and son Will and Jaden Smith. Originally slated to open on June 7th, the post apocalyptic movie will now be released May 31st, alongside wide releases Now You See Me and The Purge. This new release date is a week after Memorial Day Weekend, which will see guaranteed box office hits Fast & Furious 6 and The Hangover Part III clash for the top spot. Whether or not After Earth's moving closer to this battle is a good idea remains to be seen, of course. Do you plan on checking out After Earth in theaters this summer?

Meh...it will probably suck like the last five or so movies from Shyamalan.

Hmmm... so you're saying... they moved it AWAY from Man of Steel, a movie that shares the same target demographic and has so far proven to be one of the most anticipated films of the year?

I wonder why?

And of course, this news come hot on the heels of the newest Man of Steel trailer, which has been a hit with pretty much everyone. Looks like someone is trying to salvage their second weekend...

I wonder what the twist is going to be in this one?ShamalamaBADDDDD..... You are going to have to make some good movies again before I go see another in the theatres. Especially with all the amazing movies coming out this summer. This movie is going to get lost in the crowd. And seriously?! What happened to you after Unbreakable and 6th Sense????

Blu-ray only.Thank you, come again...

Most likely too avoid clashing with MOS.

@ spidegy94 @ the fox, I was feeling this from the beginning when they showed the after earth trailer with release date that it was gonna have some serious competition, smart move on their part to be honest. Though it won't do much of a big difference

This is good. Will Smith pulls in big numbers at the box office, so this will give his fans enough time to get out of Man Of Steel's way. Win/Win

I think MOS almost non existent marketing (albeit 2 full Trailers) has still got it in full steam!

Surely they want to give it more time to earn as much as possible... But few days after FAST 6 & HANGOVER 3... That an aweful decision... AE is gona be ripped from both sides... ' it already doesn't look good.... Then that Will Smith "superstar" attitude...!
I didn't want to but I might have to skip it!!

That's one shitty poster... it's the sort of poster Steven Seagal would be featured in if he starred in a Sci-Fi...

At this point I'd recommend every movie in June back away from MoS.

As everyone says, they also saw the Man of Steel trailer, and realized they had no chance at direct competition.

M. Night Shyamalan has become the only director in history with household name recognition for making shitty movies. Every time I've see a trailer with his name on it in a theater, you hear people groan and chuckle.

Smart move. The Hangover 3 and Fast and Furious 6 are "R" rated films targeted mainly at young adults. After Earth is targeted at a wider demo that includes families.

Its better to move up a week to go after the family audiences that wouldn't see the "R" rated films anyway then to stand pat and see a massive second week drop as those families go to Man of Steel on its opening weekend.

Don't be shocked if Columbia moves up its other early June film "This is the end" from it's June 12th release to June 7th.

They already were feeling the heat when they move it up to a Wednesday opening to get a 2 day jump on Man of Steel.

I love Will Smith, but I don't see anything about this film that is remotely interesting. Smith has always picked intriguing projects and brought his charming brand of humor to the action and comedy films. I don't see how his personality will shine in this movie. The whole thing has really bland feel to it.

Jaden may develop into a great young actor some day, but I'm really starting to feel like they are forcing him on us by putting him in projects that seem better suited for someone else. I think dad is trying to find that "Independence Day" movie for Jaden, that'll kick his career into overdrive.

M.Knight. Please. Stop.
