REVIEW: Nimród Antal's Predators

REVIEW: Nimród Antal's Predators

I finally got a chance to see "Predators," a Robert Rodriguez-produced sequel that gives us a new take of the fan favorite killer alien. Is it worth seeing, or it is just another bad movie in this summer season? Check it out!

SPOILER WARNING! IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM YET, DON'T READ THIS REVIEW!
It's been twenty years since the Predator was in a standalone film. Now we get a new fresh take from director Nimród Antal and producer Robert Rodriquez. First off, I will not be mentioning “Aliens Vs. Predator,” because this one has nothing to do with those two films.

Predators is a sequel of the first two Predator films, and it takes place on a different planet where humans are being hunted by alien creatures. A group of people finds themselves in a jungle fighting for their lives against over-powering aliens, who have only one goal: kill the prey. The one thing that these people have in common is that they are all killers and criminals on Earth!

THE GOOD:

I really liked the direction of the movie; it was everything you wanted from a Predator sequel. At times, you could see the look of the film is sort of the same as the first one--which is not a bad thing. I'm glad they decided to bring back the jungle territory, because it definitely gave the film a better look and atmosphere that was kind of missing it the second one. The music in this film is amazing. They really respected the score of the original film and they brought that unique sound that was just perfect in almost every scene. The action is great, and there’s a lot of it.
What I liked is there are good practical effects, which proves that it doesn't have to be all CGI. One thing I wasn't expecting to be good is the acting and dialogue. But man, was I wrong. Sure, there are some bad parts, but overall the actors were great. Adrien Brody plays an ex-military soldier who became a mercenary and is basically the leader in this film. Trust me, when I read that he will playing a badass killer, I didn't have many expectations to see this at all. He is playing that character so great, that through most of the film you can really see his kicking those Predators. He also buffed up for this role, so he could look more of a kick-ass soldier, and he sure does. Alice Braga also does a great job as a black ops soldier and she was great in every scene. There are a lot of characters that were good, but the one that stands out the most, is Laurence Fishburne's character Noland. He was awesome, and he has some great lines. The only problem is he was only in the movie for a very short time. The ending is perfect. It gives you an idea that they will make a sequel. By the end there are some great fights and twists which are really well made.

THE BAD:

Okay, from the above you can tell that I really enjoyed the movie, but there are some parts that were..Well let's just say stupid. First thing is that Danny Trejo's character is in the movie for like ten minutes. It was really good to see him from the start and then, ten minutes later, he is dead. Same thing with Laurence Fishburne. His first scene is the one where he is wearing that Predator mask, and that scene was his best one. He was in the movie maybe 10-15 minutes, and that's it. I actually thought that he was one of the main characters, but I was wrong. One more thing that quite didn't work is the CGI alien dogs. You know, it wasn't THAT bad, but they could have improved it.

That's about it. Film is opening in the US theaters tomorrow, and I would like to suggest you that you go see it, because it will not disappoint. It is a Predator fans must-see, and will bring new fans into the fold!

MY RATING: 7.5/10

@Tea: Unfortunately, no. But they did have a scene where they talked about how in 1987 there was a group of soldiers in a jungle being hunted by a Predator and what happened to them.

Watched Predators on Monday for the premiere in Singapore. Some might like it, others may not. Me, I'm fine with the movie. And no, its not a reboot nor a prequel. The event of the first movie is mentioned in the movie. So I can safely say that it's a sequel. It's a predator movie as worthy as the first one, finally.

I saw it last night. It was good. Not great but good. I agree with your review. I also thought the dialogue was very good. More Lawrence and More Danny would have been great. I'm glad I saw it.
