Rise of the Planet of the Apes Surpasses $100 Million at the Global Box Office

A great deal of skepticism met the announcement of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but in the past couple of weeks buzz for the film had grown until it opened last week to critical raves and surpassing everybody's box office expectations. And going into its second weekend, the film has surpassed $100 million at the box office.

Over the past week there has definitely been talk of a sequel to the film, largely from director Rupert Wyatt and screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. Now, however, the likelihood of one is truly growing.

Rise was made for "only" $93 million, meaning that it has to gross $186 million to break in (which is Hollywood's usual formula -- negative cost plus marketing and the cost to make up prints). With the film opening in many more markets overseas this weekend, the odds are that it should be in the area of $150 million by Monday. Translation: we're VERY likely to see more adventures with Caesar and his friends.

I'm sure this is a great movie, but I really wish hollywood would try something original again. Everything is prequels like Planet of The Apes, Sequels and reboots like Total Recall and Fright Night. There are plenty of original ideas and intellectual properties they can draw from. Can you imagine the sheer awesomeness of an Assassins' Creed movie? Or God of War or L4D?

@shadowelz- you have a very good point, but sometimes these types of movies turn out better than the originals. Like "Bride of Frankenstein" was better than "Frankenstein".

Wouldn't go that far @Maia87, it was really good but I still would rate Super 8 and Cap over it. Better than Green Lantern though lol
