MATT SMITH, DAVID TENNANT AND JOHN HURT TO FACE OFF AGAINST DALEKS IN 50th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL

The Doctors, Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt will battle the deadly Daleks, the BBC announces today, in the show’s 50th anniversary special.

Returning to BBC One on 23 November the highly anticipated adventure will star: Matt Smith; Jenna Coleman; David Tennant; Billie Piper; John Hurt and Joanna Page. In a surprise twist in the recent series finale it was revealed John Hurt would be playing a Doctor, alongside Smith and Tennant.

The Daleks are the second monster to be announced for the 50th and will join the shape shifting Zygons, which have only appeared in the show once before in 1975. The Daleks were one of the first monsters to terrify audiences in 1963, 50 years ago, cementing their place in British popular culture.

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, said:

“The Doctor once said that you can judge a man by the quality of his enemies, so it's fitting that for this very special episode, he should be facing the greatest enemies of all.”

The 50th anniversary episode was shot earlier this year at BBC Cymru Wales' Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff and across South Wales. Filming also took place in iconic London locations the Tower of London and Trafalgar Square for a huge stunt, which saw Matt Smith dangling from a TARDIS alongside Nelson’s Column.

I'm eagerly awaiting the announcement that Paul McGann will be back at the 8th Doctor! Probably won't happen, but I can dream.

Paul McGann was robbed. He was great as the Doctor, but the script was bad. It'd be awesome if they gave him some more screen time in some way, but it is starting to look as if they're giving his role in the Time War to John Hurt.

Time will tell... it always does.

Eccleston does not like being associated with Doctor Who. He gets mad when somebody asks him about it, and he absolutely refused to return for this special.

I'm fine if he wants to be known as a diverse actor, but taking on the role of the Doctor in the revival was his choice. He knew full well the attention he'd get playing a role so iconic.

It would have been so cool to have seen him back. Whatever, Tenant and Smith will rock the house.

@Person... Paul McGann has done lots of radio plays for doctor who, not the same as being on the show but its something.

@thewonderer - I agree 100%. It wasn't like when the studio asked Bob Denver to play Gilligan and Bob already knew he'd always be known as Gilligan. We're talking about THE DOCTOR here. 8 actors (9 if you include the movie adaptation) had already played the character. I understand times were harsh during the show's renewal, but he should've known what he was getting himself into!

Why still whine and bitch about it now? He did an excellent job in my opinion and should always embrace the role that elevated you. This is like Michael Jordan putting down the game of basketball.

They should be much more menacing, especially they won't fear him... because they don't know him anymore!

I've read that Hurt will be playing a Dark Doctor?, The Doctor between the 8th and 9th and if that doesn't make sense to you well it's meant to mean that the 8th decided to stop being a time lord which I never knew could happen.

I'm excited for this but I really don't like Moffat's plots. I hope this story is a good one. I just want to see good old-fashioned Doctor Who sci fi stuff instead of convoluted story telling and magic based themes!
Billy Piper owns my heart!
