According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sigourney Weaver will join Hugh Jackman in Neill Blomkamp's currently shooting sci-fi movie, in which Sharlto Copley will play the title role of Chappie. The District 9 actor will play (via motion capture) a law enforcement robot who is stolen and reprogrammed by a couple of gangsters played by Ninja and Yolandi Visser of Die Antwoord. The Newsroom's Dev Patel will also star. THR don't reval what role Weaver will play, but they do provide an official logline for the movie: "After being kidnapped by two criminals during birth, Chappie becomes the adopted son in a strange and dysfunctional family. Chappie is preternaturally gifted, one of a kind, a prodigy. He also happens to be a robot." Chappie is a partnership between Sony Pictures and Media Rights Capital, and is based on Blomkamp's short film Tetra Vaal, which you can see below.

I remember watching Tetra Vaal short waaay back when it first came out. Interesting he wants to make it into a film now. Not sure it has the scope but hard to say without seeing a screenplay or synopsis.

After Elyisium I feel like he's a one trick pony. It was the same story with a different coat of paint (a weaker coat if anything). Hopefully this movie will be different enough, but keeps Blumpkin's signature aesthetics. And I hope Chappie is less black and white with its story, and more morally gray like D9.

But having Die Antwoord in this movie...idk. They're too eccentric, even for a sci-fi film. Maybe I'll be wrong and they'll be the best part.

I'm definitely interested, but hopefully this will be more like D9 and less like Elysium. At it's core, I feel like Elysium could have been a fantastic movie, but it got "Hollywood-ified". I hope Blomkamp learned some lessons, there...

Afrikaans hip-hop. There's something I never imagined would feature in a sci-fi flick. Of course I didn't even know such a thing existed five minutes ago.
