Skydance Productions is negotiating the rights to turn the animated series from the '70s Star Blazers into a feature film, which Christopher McQuarrie will write the script to.

Writes Deadline, "The series was based on the Japanese anime series Space Battleship Yamato. Both are described as "space opera," involving alien invasions, the near extinction of the human race, and a last dash journey through space to save the planet."

Skydance, which has used Legendary Pictures and its investments in various films as an example to follow, is involved with a number of projects for Paramount, among them Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocal, the rebooted Jack Ryan franchise with Star Trek's Chris Pine playing Ryan, My Mother's Curse and the Dark Horse comic scheduled to become a film, Strange case of Hyde, among others.

Wasn't already a live action movie released in Japan on December 2010?

@BlackSands

yep there was. my brother lives there and saw it. We grew up watching the show so he was excited, and he did enjoy it! but for me?it's not my type of ending (trying not to spoil) so I would look forward to a fresh take on the material. but nifty effects and pix (he sent me a movie magazine that i could read a word of, but lots of production and concept images)

@write33 I'm not that surprised by the ending... its typical of some anime I know, so in a way, it sort of fits with what they were going for. What impressed me the most was their near-faithfulness to the show in terms of design. My greatest concern is that once Hollywood gets a hold of it, they'll do a "typical" Hollywood take on it... I'd rather have a new animated movie if they end up butchering it. I've rarely seen some Japanese animated translation to Hollywood live-action do well. The closest thing to it was Guyver Dark Hero in an attempt to mirror that, it wasn't perfect, but it was close.

This was great on its own i just watched it last month and thought they did an excellent job adapting the source material. I use to love this show and I still have a few episodes on dvd. I people want to see this movie they should get a copy of this movie and watch it with the subtitles , your not going to get any better on the production of this title an the Us will just ruin it.

I grew up watching this show and hope they don't ruin it. The Japanese version is what I hoped for when I saw those clips. I am wondering if an Americanized version will use another ship. I will be surprised to see and enemy ship of the US during WWII be the hero.

@InfiniteMonkey That last bit was uncalled for.

When it was originally aired in the US, the name of the ship Yamato was changed to Argo. I'm betting they may broaden the "names" to sound a lot more universal like Star Trek with a lot of races inside the ship. The one thing I am worried is that they will somehow screw with the design of the ships and whatnot. The 2010 live action movie was the best that it can get to an anime to live action translation as can be.... I would rather have them release the movie here either dubbed or subtitled. They're never gonna be able to match the dedication that went into that film since just about everybody who worked on the 2010 film were basically fans of the original anime, and it showed.
