So, here's a tweet from Louise Brealey (Sherlock's Molly Hooper)...

Pure speculation here, but could that hashtag of hers be meant as a play of "KHAAAN!", thus inadvertently confirming the identity of her co-star's character?

I know that the last scene leaves the impression that Spock will die, but it has got to be total misdirection by Abrams. I can't see them giving up such a huge spoiler in the damn teaser trailer.

Looking damn good so far! And it seems Bones may actually get to do something this time around.

That last screengrab reminds me of the moment right before Spock died. [frick]...the villain is Khan

I mean when Shatner's Kirk touched the glass with Nimoy's Spock.

So they are gonna kill off Spock in just the 2nd film?

Cumberpatch's anger reminds me of the last revenge-seeking villain I liked: Bardem's Silva. I think Cumberpatch will be the "memorable villain" the screenwriters promised.

@Xandera Yeah, you're right. It doesn't confirm Spock's death, but it adds to prior discussions that Quinto would be stepping away from movies like Star Trek. It may very well be JJ Abrams paying homage to that moment from Wrath Of Khan, except with another character dressed in blue dying. Or perhaps it's simply a coincidence and the marketing department decided to take advantage of guessing fans

Or... furthering the The Dark Knight influence... it's like Gordon's "death" during the memorial of Commissioner Loeb... Spock "dies" and comes back in the end to save the day!

@LP4 I think it would be a bad move if they do... but I'm not sure how Abrams will treat this franchise... like Christopher Nolan (only three films) or continuing on for others. Given how long he took to produce this sequel... I'd go with the former.

And that looks like Cumberpatch (black sleeve) is reaching out for Spock... I wonder if they're going to make them related in some way. Abrams said we'd see some of Spock dealing with being an endangered species. Perhaps Cumberpatch is a clone or maybe has some DNA from a Vulcan. He fends off Vulcan fighting techniques pretty well (leaked set pictures).

Actually i dont think its Khan. Gary "died" in the IDW comics, maybe Cumberbatch is Gary wanting revenge. Maybe that is the "vengeance" he spoke about

6of13 - 12/6/2012, 2:59 AM
It's not Khan.
Quite a few of the previous Trek movies had villains looking for vengeance. Also Khan's vendetta was personal against Kirk for stranding him on Ceti Alpha V for 15 years.
This sequel is set 5 years after the last film.
Although Khan is stronger and smarter than your average human, how does it make him a "one man weapon of mass destruction"? Also, where are his band of followers? Because it seems like Cumberbatch's villain is acting alone.

Some movies I despised before seeing but ended up loving it Harry Potter was one as was Star Trek. I was blown away by this wonderful cinema experience. Into Darkness has a pretty big shoes to fill but I don't doubt Abrams, but i'll still have my worries. Can't wait to see this!!

It's Kahn, his family is his other genetically engineered supermen.

That quote at the end gives it away methinks. As far as I know, Mitchell has no real family ties.

Why is Cumberbatch wearing a Star Fleet uniform then?

@6of13 That's the one thing giving me pause, Everything else points to Kahn though.

It aint Khan MarkJulian. Look at Alice Eve's hairstyle, it is exactly the same as Elizabeth Dehner from the tos episode with Gary Mitchell.

It is Gary Mitchell.

And plus he was able to withstand the vulcan nerve pinch. Last i saw Space Seed as a kid, i seem to remember khan's men were easily subdued by the nerve pinch

Could be a brand new villian, much as I love the idea of Khan it would be cool if they do something fresh, that's the best thing about Star Trek, you have limitless possibilites.

@kylem- Not really. I grew up with tng and ent as a fan. These movies are just popcorn flicks. Don't take things so personally

I've been watching Star Trek for the last 30 years. Nothing in that trailer says 'Trek' to me even remotely. Just looks like a generic scifi popcorn flick to me, not Trek.

I thought that was what Star Wars was for......

Spock doesn't die! We know from the first Abrams film that he lives to be an old man who kinda looks like Leonard Nimoy.
