Kylo Ren Almost Looked Like Captain Phasma In STAR WARS: The FORCE AWAKENS

Costume designer Michael Kaplan reveals that Captain Phasma's (Gwendoline Christie) distinctive, chrome body armor originally started out as the look for Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Which of the two First Order characters do you think had the best look?

Now that we're well past the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the cast and crew are finally free to talk about the productions process and reveal behind-the-scenes secrets.  Case in point, costume designer Michael Kaplan has revealed to Clothes on Film that Captain Phasma's design originally started out as concept art for Kylo Ren.  However, J.J. Abrams immediately shot down the look, only for Lucafilm's Kathleen Kennedy to spot the illustration and fall in love with it.  Her response is what prompted J.J. Abrams to create the character of Captain Phasma and cast Gwendoline Christie.

Said Kaplan, "When I was trying to tackle Kylo Ren's character, I thought, what if he were The Lord of the Stormtroopers, in bright shining silver armor?  Concept artists (Dermot Power). He produced a stunning illustration which was immediately shot down by JJ; not right for Kylo Ren! The drawing remained on our design room wall. One afternoon, Kathy Kennedy came in for a meeting, pointed at the illustration and exclaimed: “What is that? It’s fantastic!"

This interview might reveal some interesting details about the development process on Episode VII.  Did character design start before the script was finished? In thinking of Kylo Ren as 'The Lord of the Stormtroopers' that would seem to indicate that Kaplan didn't really know what Kylo Ren's role was in the film.  Did the super-secretive J.J. Abrams not allow him to read the script?  And it sounds as if Captain Phasma wasn't a character originally planned to be in the film at all until Kathleen Kennedy fell in love with the design of the armor.  Perhaps that's why Phasma's role in the film was so small?  Hopefully, Rian Johnson will have more for her to do in Episode VIII.

Makes sense why Abrams turned it down; Ren wants to be like Vader more than anything.

@Invictor -

True.......I guess they really wanted that Darth Vader connection.....plus Darth Vader is one of the most well known villains in the world.

The whole mask thing should have ended with Darth Vader.........

I think the mask makes sense. He want a new identity and hide Ben Solo's face.

Kylo's helmet was great. Not a big fan of his dark monk garb though. He looked better when he didn't have the big coat on.

Captain Phasma was wasted. I kept expecting her to have an important role or even do anything at all. But she was just eye candy.

So basically they created Captain Phasma just because they wanted to turn that illustration into something real. Makes sense why that character had no arc at all.

@ManCalledSting I agree that they should have left the reveal until when Han confronts Kylo. The way I think things should have played out is have Poe Dameron help Finn escape but then have Poe either stay captured or be recaptured by the First Order. His last name is never revealed but he exemplifies a a Han Solo type character.

Then right before they go to shut down the Starkiller base's shields, have Leia tell Han to rescue "our son" and to save him from the dark side. Make the audience think that Poe is actually their son. Then when Han sees Kylo and says I'm here to save my son, and have Kylo take of his mask and say something like "I am no longer your son."

Would have been a much more impactful and shocking reveal. Obviously this changes the plot quite a bit having Poe out of commission, but his character really didn't do much to begin with besides lead the resistance.

Overall I really liked The Force Awakens, but I think it could have been better if rather than repeating similar plot points, it reversed them. I would have had the resistance go to destroy star killer base (before the star killer base has blown anything up) and go in overconfident only to fail miserably in defeating the first order and the first order as a result destroys the New Republic.

Now everything is turned upside down and with Han dead and Leia knows the only way to stop the First Order from destroying more systems is to find Luke. So she sends Rey to find him. Kylo can still fail to defeat Rey and train further with Snoke. Alot of the same things can happen, but it's more unexpected while still being familiar.
