Star Trek, with a history of pushing forward progressive ideals within the industry and on screen, has always been a model to follow. This past week proves no different, with Hanelle Culpepper revealed to be at the helm for the first two episodes of the upcoming Picard series.

Culpepper will be the first woman to ever launch a Star Trek series. In addition, The Wrap has also revealed a pair of members for the expanding cast.

According to those behind the scenes, Culpepper seemed to be an obvious choice to launch the anticipated series. Head of the latest slew of Star Trek television shows, Alex Kurtzman. had this to say about Culpepper's newest gig.

Hanelle is a gifted and dynamic filmmaker whose directorial choices are always deeply rooted in character . . . I’ve been a huge fan of her work since she started with us on Discovery, and she’s the perfect person to re-introduce the beloved character of Picard to longtime fans and new viewers alike. We’re thrilled she’s joining our Trek family on this next adventure.

As for the cast, Santiago Cabrera (Big Little Lies) and Michelle Hurd (Blindspot) have joined the series, which will no doubt bring fans where no Trekkie has gone before.

Well dang it. Spoiler alert. I’m watching Next Generation at this very moment. I guess I know Picard survives this tricky situation he is right now.

Really looking forward to the adventures of a senile Picard as he tends to his vineyard, battles space-dementia, and solves quaint mysteries with the help of his caretaker, a digitally de-aged Brent Spiner as Data.

Rumor has it in the pilot episode the maid is dusting the mantle and knocks over the computer drive imprisoning holographic Moriarty allowing him to escape and hijinx ensue!

As excited as I am to see Picard, I'm more excited to see what the 25th century will look like. If we're forwarding 20 years or more past Nemesis, we are in the first few years of a new century. We haven't seen actual Star Trek future since Nemesis, 16 years ago! Prime Spock and the Nero notwithstanding.

That's Aquaman from the scrapped Justice League Mortal movie and Fire from the '97 Justice League TV movie.
