STAR TREK Producer Compares Upcoming Sequel To EMPIRE STRIKES BACK; Remains Vague On Villain

Producer Bryan Burk suggests to MTV that J.J Abrams' Trek sequel is going to get straight into the action, much the same way the fantastic follow up to Star Wars did..

It has almost become customary for a director/actor/producer to reference Empire Strikes Back when hyping up a big sci-fi/action orientated blockbuster sequel that they are involved in. And why not? It is after all one of, if not the greatest sequel of all time (I realize that it is arguably not a true sequel, and part of a trilogy, but you know what I mean) so they may as well aim high. Unfortunately these guys can let their mouths write checks that their movies can't cash. Will the Star Trek sequel live up to the comparison? Producer Bryan Burk is biting the bullet.

From MTV

"Unlike the last film, where we were restarting and setting up the characters ... we're going to jump right back in, and we don't have to set up everybody and we can go right in it. We're kind of in a mad dash at the beginning of the film. In all of our conversation, we reference a lot of our favorite films and how 'Empire Strikes Back' was spectacular and how they were able to pick up and keep going."

In fairness I think after the quality of the last movie and with Abrams back at the helm we won't have anything to worry about. Nice to hear it will be full steam ahead into the story too. But what about KHAAAAAAAAAN? Well I think at this point we know he is the villain, they know that we know he is the villain. But Burk still won't let the (official) cat out of the bag..

"There are amazing villains all throughout the 'Star Trek' universe as well as new villains. As we did in the last film, there's a lot of directions you can go with the film. In this case, we chose to do something we thought would be original and unique and different, and I think on paper, we made the right choice. Now we have to go shoot."

If you click the link below you can also hear Simon Pegg's thoughts. He also refuses to confirm Khan but says that is because he really doesn't know! Apparently even though the movie is set to shoot in January none of the cast have read the script yet. Hmmmmm.
