Dave Filoni Explains Why STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE's Duel Of The Fates Is So Important

The Phantom Menace isn't remembered overly fondly, but most agree that the final lightsaber battle was awesome. Now, Dave Filoni has talked in passionate detail about what makes it so damn important!

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace isn't exactly fondly remembered, but the final battle pitting Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi against Darth Maul was beyond epic. Accompanied by John Williams' breathtaking score, "Duel of the Fates," it was a standout moment in the prequels, and perhaps more important than you realized.

In the latest episode of DIsney Gallery: The Mandalorian on Disney+, The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian writer/director/producer Dave Filoni revealed why he believes the sequence means so much to the franchise.

Explaining that the fight is all about the fate of Anakin Skywalker, Filoni's passionate explanation is a must-see, and can be viewed in the embedded Tweet below. What's most impressive is filmmakers like Jon Favreau, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Rick Famuyiwa all sitting in awe as he offers his take.

This is only an excerpt, but Filoni's knowledge of the Star Wars franchise will leave you desperate to see him one day appointed the new President of Lucasfilm, as he very clearly knows his stuff. Honestly, it feels like that's something we could see happen in the not too distant future.

@Necropolitan - Dave Filoni giving us an in depth explanation that adds an extra layer and depth to the movie that makes us realise how much of a asset he is to Lucasfilm.

George Lucas just be like "I just wanted a cool fight between two Jedi and a bad guy with a double ended lightsaber". :-)

@Necropolitan - I wish I could see the film from his eyes because what he got out of it sounds so epic.

Episode 1 is my least favorite Star Wars film, but this is my favorite saber duel in the franchise. It felt modern, it had purpose, and the score beautifully compliments it. The following two lost sight of what makes these fights so special. Episode 3 of course had a memorable battle between Obi-Wan and Anakin, but even that went a little overlong, and gave in a little too much into the flash and style.

Duel Of The Fates was perfectly balanced all around, the one major sign of the film that Star Wars still had gas in the tank.

Why Kennedy continues to be in charge of this franchise is absolutely ridiculous. She has single handedly ruined what was once the most profitable name in entertainment. She is responsible for the only Star Wars film that has been a financial disappointment. She allowed that god awful trilogy to happen. There is literally no reason why she should be in charge instead of Filoni other than bullshit backstage politics.

It always bugged me that people kept "breaking down" the fights in the prequels to explain that the light saber fights arent better than the originals. Even though all they mention is either story related or beyond ridiculously nitpicky.

Filoni clearly should be the one in charge of the Star Wars franchise. This gets reinforced on a pretty continuous basis.

The best fight of the prequels imo. An awesome set piece with a fight that was very well choreographed and not too over the top with a bunch of CGI acrobatics and green screen overload. You could really feel the tension.

It's so important because it's a bad ass score that accompanies the best lightsaber fight of the entire series. It was the only saving grave for people who grew up with the originals. To my kid brother 11 years younger than me, he ate up the whole deal. For me, I only enjoyed the dessert.
