Lucasfilm has worked hard in keeping any revealing details about Star Wars: Episode VIII under wraps; when we last left off, Rey (Daisy Ridley) had located the missing Jedi Master Luke Skywalker on the planet Ach-To. There's almost nothing known about how the film's story will progress, but judging by some recent comments from director Rian Johnson, it appears the focus will remain on character development.

In an interview with Variety, Johnson said that one of the goals he had in Episode VIII was to learn more about his characters (specifically Rey, Finn, and Poe) without having to rely on exposition or a retelling of earlier events. “I wanted to know more about each of them, and that doesn’t just mean information or backstory,” Johnson said. “Figure out what’s the most difficult thing each of them could be challenged with now — let’s throw that at them and dig into what really makes them tick by seeing how they handle that.”

With Luke returning in a major capacity in Episode VIII, the stakes are obviously high to give the Jedi Master his due, and Johnson reassured that he's “approaching it with a take that I hope feels honest and real and is going to be interesting to folks and make sense.”

As for the relationship between Luke and Rey, Johnson said the two will develop a strong connection, with “both not knowing what’s going to happen and also [Rey] having a lot of expectations in her head about how this is going to go.” Johnson also elaborated that Rey's arc in the film will be akin to a coming-of-age story. “It very much feels like what we all go through in adolescence, the dawning of this new chapter of our lives,” with the mystery of her family being “a really powerful part of her setup and something I really wanted to dig into with this.”

As for when fans will finally get an official title reveal? "All in good time," Johnson said.

The Force Awakens is the first star wars movie I watched. I have no idea why I didn't want the original trilogy. I knew about star wars but never sat down to watch any of them. Are they that good or over hyped? Do they still hold up?

@Highflyer - As both a viewer and a fan, trust me, its worth the watch. And yeah, they still hold up pretty well.

Could I smell a romance between Rey and Finn?

@tb86 - I hope so. They had some good chemistry in TFA.

@TheLight - Agreed, though I was getting the vibe that Finn is gonna be stuck in the friendzone for awhile at first

Narrative wise...Episode 8 is in a interesting situation.

Rey beat Kylo.
The Resistance took out the best the New Order had to Offer.

So they have some major work to do...to raise the stakes to make Episode 8 even have conflict and then even MORE work to do to even have our Heroes in any type of danger entering Episode 9.

It's a tough tight wire to walk, but since J.J. made TFA such a major Victory for the Good Guys...it's now a Tight Wire act they will have to do.

Some immediate ideas would be...

- Kill Luke (but he's back in Episode 9)
- Kill Leia (but that is in bad taste...and she was already planned for Episode 9)
- Rey Join Kylo leaving Luke the only Hope for the Galaxy
- Luke Join the Dark Side and Rey is the only Hope for the Galaxy.

Right now...the Stakes int he Sequel trilogy are very low...Excited to see how Johnson and the Disney Team get them up.

@IronGenesis - I'm 100% sure the two last ones there won't happen.

@ODanil - Yeah I hear you...
...but I struggle with just what kind of obstacle could seriously threaten our heroes in Episode 8 & 9.

Rey who never picked up a Lightsaber...beat Kylo who had been training for 25 or so years.

So if Rey can beat Kylo...then what problems will Luke have? Which only leaves Snoke. Luke took down Vader...Who is Snoke compared to Vader?
