George Lucas Says RED TAILS "The Closest You'll Ever Get to EPISODE VII"

While on The Daily Show with John Stewart, George Lucas claimed that his new movie Red Tails is as close as he'll ever come to making a sequel to Star Wars.

George Lucas was promoting his latest film, Red Tails, which tells the tale of World War II's Tuskegee Airmen, the all African-American group of fighter pilots. It's a movie that he wrote, and will not be directing. I repeat, he is not directing this film. Lucas may have finally realized that he no longer has the chops. Which was painfully obvious in his Star Wars prequels, which were stuffed with unnecessary CGI, and characters that suffered from some unknown disease that only allowed them to have conversations on couches.

Expanded universe sucks. If for some Tebow miracle that there is ever an Episode VII, the writer should do what he wants and take zero inspiration from the expanded universe novels.

not trying to be a racist here and my knowledge of WWII is kinda limited, but were there really African American pilots in those days ?

I was a member of the Star Wars Fan Club in 1982 when he first said he wanted to make this in the news letter called Bantha Tracks!!

...Only took him 30 bloody years!

Tuskegee airmen, a real company of heroic black fighter pilots from my home state of Alabama..I had to learn about them in school.

You make a big deal about the fact he wrote this and won't direct it like its a good thing! That's the wrong way around!

Yes, the SW prequels were crammed with unnessersary FX but the biggest flaw with the movies was the writing! His scripts are terrible! I mean SOCKINGLY BAD! If he goes anywhere close to a movie with a pen in hand I will avoid it like a plague ridden Grif!

@ hunterelf - yes, it was called "operation get behind the darkies".

No, I am not racist, I'm just quoting South Park. If you find it offensive then I find your lack of humour offensive.

Get over it George, can this man not move on from one good idea that he has to re-tread the same ground time and time again, even this looks like a scene from star wars but with war time planes. He really has lost the plot!

@ DC27 - I kind of agree with you. I simply love the SW universe and I enjoyed the story of the prequels, I just hated the scripting. GL should have outlined his prequel story to competent writers (or chimps) and left them to it. Then we would have had an epic trilogy. As it stands, I enjoy the action, I enjoy the story arc, but I hate all the needless crap. Who the [frick] programmes 1000's of war droids to be bumbling idiots? That alone renders the prequels as pathetic movies!

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American WWII fighter pilots. Extremely successful. Most African Americans who served were behind the scenes...ie non combat. Interestingly enough there were 3 female aviation squadrons in the Russian Air force. One of which was highly decorated in its defense of Sevastopol and the Crimean peninsula. Another was known by the Germans as "the Night Witches". Who would like to see that movie ;)

[frick] George Lucas. He managed to be such a dick that even the unbutchered original triogy is now tainted. This is the closest we'll get to a star wars sequel? I WAS going to go see RED TAILS. Now, [frick] it.

People also love the Resident Evil and Twilight movies. That doesn't mean that the movies don't suck, just that some people are easily entertained.

He is quite honest, it's almost impressive lol. I was like 'wow' he thinks this movie that he is promoting isn't as good as the other ones would be lol?

I say reboot the original trilogy. Give it to the guy that did empire his rotj ending would have been epic. Plus Harrison was the only great actor in them.

"the changes hes made are to better his original vision of the films"

Bull shit. He claimed the changes were cosmetic, to achieve what he couldn't in the 70s. As we can see, most of the changes make absolutely no sense and some alter the story and the characters personalities. Fixing Lukes uncolored lighsaber aboard the falcon is a cosmetic change. The first butchered version of the trilogy left that alone while changing all kinds of other stuff.
