J.J. Abrams Reveals His Favorite STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Character; Talks The Dark Side

First up, is J.J. Abrams' interview with Collider! In this interview, the Star Wars: The Force Awakens director reveals the character he thinks had the best performance in the upcoming film. "I can only say that Gwendoline Christie is my favorite. She just killed it." What? The lady wearing the costume has the best performance? According to Abrams, yes, and here's why. "But it’s a lot to wear and to have a performance when you’re wearing that requires a different kind of skill set and an additional talent, and she’s got it." He then elaborates and praises both Gwendoline and her character's design. "It’s an incredible thing to work with her. I am glad that a character has been designed that is visually as stunning as that is, because she deserves it and the fans do to. When I first saw that design my mind was blown because it looked so undeniable."

Pretty cool, right? Well, next up is J.J. Abrams' interview with The Los Angeles Times, where he revealed why someone would still want to join the dark side after all those dreadful years. But before he answered that, he gave us a brief lecture about the Force. "I do think the sort of obvious answer is that the Force has a light side and a dark side. It’s not just one thing. It’s not just that the Force is good, the Force is ... it can be a very dangerous thing. It can be a very seductive thing." He then added, "I think that the story clearly requires a conflict of some sort."

Back to the initial question which was, why would someone still join the Dark side after all their evil, Abrams delivers the perfect answer to that question. "If people were rejecting the dark side somehow entirely it would be a hard thing to figure out what we would be up against. It was part of the, what felt like an authentic and true inevitability of what might of happened in the years post-[Return of the Jedi]."

With Star Wars: The Force Awakens set to hit theaters December 18, and star John Boyega, Lupita Nyong’o, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Issac, and more, sound off below with your thoughts!

I think it's not much about the Force being good and evil, and more about corrupting power. There is a certain level of use of the Force you can tap in before power corrupts the wielder. The Sith are the ones who went beyond the treshold, and succombed to a power beyond their control. That's my take on it. Look at Starkiller from the Force Unleashed. When he became good, he still used the power he learned from the Dark Side, and put it to good.

Gusto, don't do it. There hasn't been a decent Star Wars movie in over 30 years.

like @wakandasoul said it's all about method of access. The jedi access he force dispassionately from a place of peace using concentration and discipline to shape their usage for defensive purposes only, the sith access it passionately, relying on their emotions to control it and shaping it into an offensive weapon. And there is ample evidence that they are tapping into some darker corner of the force based on the way that they were said to obscure the precognition granted to the jedi by the force.

I won't know what to do with myself if this movie is bad. I haven't been this hyped for a movie since TDKR.

@blackandyellow then never come down here, because your perception would be ruined. And that's not a bad perception to have, if it was only a reality.

@Nightsking, JJ Abrams is good for Star Wars I think. I still don’t look at him like many do as the second coming. The throwing out of all the cannon and the certain statements have left me slightly cautious when it comes to him. I think these films will turn out well

But as far as his Star Trek films. They were completely insulting to true Star Trek. Making them more Star Wars like is a major no no. Star Trek was always a little more cerebral, a little more grounded, a little more optimistic about the human condition. Personally I hate the Abrams films. From casting, to directing, to characterization right down to the final project…. it is a travesty that should be erased from Trek culture. You talk about the Space Battles to a degree I will agree with you, but there was something sorely lost in the elegance and beauty of Star Trek Space Battles. No beam weapons the graceful maneuvers, the shear beauty… these things were all gone. I am one of many who were not, and am not currently happy with the state of Star Trek…

I for one am looking forward to the independent Trek film AXANAR.
