J.J. Abrams Reveals Why 'Princess Leia' Didn't Become A Jedi After RETURN OF THE JEDI

Princess, sorry GENERAL, Leia being the leader of Resistance was confirmed a while back, but why didn't the Force strong Rebel become a Jedi after the events of Return of the Jedi? Well, Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams has now provided an answer to that...

Why didn't Leia pick up a lightsaber after Return of the Jedi? In the video below, Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams sheds some light on that, explaining her reasoning for not embracing the same path as her brother and seemingly confirming that the new trilogy will be doing away with the idea that someone needs to be young to learn the ways of the Force. However, it definitely sounds like General Leia Skywalker is going to be utilising the Force in some way in the movie, so that should be fun to see! As always, let us know your thoughts on all of this below.

Starring original cast members Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker and franchise newcomers, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong’o and Max von Sydow, Star Wars Episode VII is set to be released on December 18th, 2015. Are you excited?

"if she was in shape still she would be flopping a round a light saber just like everyone else in this movie."
The worst thing is I genuinely fear that kinda thought.

And Josh's question "Why didn't Leia pick up a lightsaber after Return of the Jedi?" - meaning that being a force sensitive makes you immediately need to carry a lightsaber, shows how Lucas disfigured a good, profound concept with the prequels...

She became a Jedi in the EU, yes? I hope they made her not become a Jedi for character arc purposes, and not just to keep things the same as the original trilogy.

She may not become a 'Jedi' per se but by using the best of her *force sensitive* abilities to lead and protect freedom and peace in the galaxy that is the very meaning of what a Jedi stands for! So the fact that she doesn't carry a lightsaber or openly study the ways of the force (or hold the title of Jedi) doesn't/shouldn't make any difference. Just a thought

Having read a ton of Star Wars books in my teenage years, I am really hoping these movies don't suck... The books transitioned so well, especially the Timothy Zahn books.

???
where did this come from?
If Leia is not to learn the force then who else 'old' is to learn it?
Han??
Please let it be true!

Well, first of all, in the Clone Wars, many Jedi were given the rank of General. So it is possible to be both. Even in A New Hope, Leia refers to Obi-Wan as "General Kenobi" in the message she inserted in R2.

Second, while Leia may not be a Jedi in the exact same sense as Mace Windu and Yoda and Obi-Wan and Luke, I would imagine that Luke at least gave her some training in using a lightsaber for defense and in using the mental aspects of the Force (telekinesis, mind tricks, meditation, etc.) And surely, at the very least he trained her in ways to resist the Dark Side. Leaving Anakin Skywalker's daughter with latent Force powers but no training at all is just asking for her to be seduced by the Dark Side.

And since he refers to someone older being trained (I doubt he means either Rey or Finn, since both seem to be around Luke's age in the original trilogy), maybe he means that at the end of the movie, Leia asks Luke to complete her training. Perhaps something happens that makes her want training now.

Considering her "father" was responsible for a lot of the empire's atrocities, Leia might not consider being related to Darth Vader to be a good thing.
That's why she refuses to use the Skywalker name - as a form of spite against dear old, departed, dad.

The Jedi get strength from meditation and no sex and more meditation. Anakin broke that training by having babies ... Leia I belive made da same sh*t

It's simple. She can't become a Jedi because she's in love with Han Solo, and since George Lucas retroactively made up the rule in the prequels about Jedis not being able to marry, now future continuities have to follow said rule.

Ignore Abrams excuse. The real reason is that he's terrible at writing characters. Changing the sex of the Luke character in his shallow New Hope rip-off was the most creativity he could muster, and the character is too thin to stand out if Leia was strong in the force.

So the trade off from him having any kind of ability to write an original script based on the obvious existing character threads, is that we get to see the new girl go repelling. See his lackluster Star Trek remakes where he has a whole universe to explore and he spends 1/4 of the movie having his characters go sky diving.

Also: blowing up stars is totally stupid, how many habitable planets can you possibly have in one system? Why spend all the extra resources to build a sun killer, when you could just build several Death Stars? The rebels just build their own Death Star and blow up your Star Killer.

Also Starkiller, those new xwing designs and Lawrence Kasdan are all the rejected plan B material from the original movies. Still fighting the storm troopers and tie fighters in xwings is a complete failure of imagination. Kinda like Tatooine = Jakku and StarKiller planet whatever = Hoth. Abrams has spent his entire life dreaming of making a Star Wars movie, to give us a desert planet and a snow planet.

He may blow the execution, but there one thing you can say about Lucas, he literally poops good characters, great character names and interesting costume, set and prop designs. Crazy old uncle George spent a huge amount of money on creative talent. This new knock off is all off the shelf fx and designs, strictly budgeted out to the nickel by Disney. Both Abrams and Kennedy need to be thrown into the reactor.

@ Fogs

[frick] Yoda and the Emperor using lightsabers?

You do realize that it was said long before the prequels that a Jedi or Sith must create their own lightsaber as part of their training, right? That kind of makes a lightsaber a must for any Jedi or Sith.
