J.J. Abrams Spills The Beans On One Of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS' Biggest Mysteries

Star Wars: The Force Awakens left us with a pretty long list of unanswered questions, but now director J.J. Abrams and screenwriter Michael Arndt have shed some light on it. What are we talking about? Well, it has something to do with a certain fan-favourite droid...

WARNING: Major SPOILERS For Star Wars: The Force Awakens Follow!

Around the halfway point in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we learn that R2-D2 has been in low power mode ever since Luke Skywalker disappeared. A detailed explanation isn't offered for how and why he wakes up, though director J.J. Abrams and original screenwriter Michael Arndt have now shed some light on that. Before getting to that though, the latter explained how exactly the dormant astromech had that map to Luke's location in his system despite being in a coma of sorts for the majority of the movie. "We had the idea about R2 plugging into the information base of the Death Star, and that’s how he was able to get the full map and find where the Jedi temples are." Abrams elaborated on that by stating: "[The] idea was that in that scene where R2 plugged in, he downloaded the archives of the Empire, which was referenced by Kylo Ren."

That makes sense and is what I think most of us had probably assumed anyway. As for why R2 wakes up, it seems like his awakening came as a result of an earlier interaction with BB-8. "BB-8 comes up and says something to him, which is basically, ‘I’ve got this piece of a map, do you happen to have the rest?’ The idea was, R2 who has been all over the galaxy, is still in his coma, but he hears this. And it triggers something that would ultimately wake him up. While it may seem, you know, completely lucky and an easy way out, at that point in the movie, when you’ve lost a person, desperately, and somebody you hopefully care about is unconscious, you want someone to return." That's a reasonable enough explanation, though R2-D2's return does coincide with Rey embracing the path of a Jedi, so could Luke have used the Force to wake him? We'll get an answer to that in around eighteen month time! For now, share your thoughts and theories below.

Wouldn't it have made more sense for R2 to share the 90% of the map he had and have some bothans scout out the rest?

R2D2 being dormant should have been a terrible idea. But the way they did it was like if a loyal dog just sat at the door waiting for his master to return, and THAT's what made it work.

Completely agree. Luke and R2 are probably my 2 favorite character in the OT. If you think about it, R2 probably spent more time with Luke than 3PO. Hell for all of Empire he was with Luke. Thinking of Empire, there's the scene of R2 waiting outside signalling Luke to come back.

R2 being sad over Luke leaving was so perfect and so well done. I mean I'm a bit upset that my 2 favorite characters from the OT got the smallest screen time but their presence and reason behind why they got little screen time was perfect and so well handled.

Suspend disbelief

You guys should just admit there were too many unjustifiable wtf moments

And you couldn't have liked ratfaced Ren or the death star sequence that much

Coupled with its uber girl power narrative and black guy shameless comic relief...

You'll sleep better when you get through your 5 stages of grief your currently in denial.

Luke puts R2 to sleep wisely during Luke's interaction with Kylo Ren. We see this during the flashback scene. When Luke feels the force awaken through Rey, Luke uses the force to wake R2 up.

@NerdMan

I'll say this again, there's talk of Rey having been mind wiped by Luke in order to protect her. Supposedly, she was one of his students, so really she's just remembering her Jedi training in those scenes.

Maybe the reason Rey saw the vision of him and R2 and why saw Kylo and his cronies destroying the Jedi academy, is because she was there. She is also the most powerful canon Jedi there has been, she mastered things that took other Jedi years, in mere hours.. I believe That she is either Luke's daughter or just a uber powerful force sensitive who Luke mind wiped and hid on Jakku from Snoke. She saw this vision of Luke because she was there and he told R2 to give her the rest of the map if he ever sees her "which means she would have left Jakku and joined with the resistance, who had the other part of it".Remember isn't "off" he is in low power mode. R2 didn't do it LUKE did, to lead Rey to him if she ever awoke... THE FORCE AWOKE...

wait.. during Rey's flashback isn't it suggested that Luke himself had something to do with R2's low power mode state? Like he programmed him to come back only after a very specific set of circumstances... or maybe even just one: when a new jedi arose. That;s what I got from it.

I agree with @RorMachine. Abrams is trying now to say whatever to distract fans from the fact that he KILLED HAN SOLO!

Some people just can't be happy with anything... it was an amazing movie, whether you want to admit it or not. It has its flaws, just as any other FANTASY movie out there does, but it's shining moments and epic-ness, and the feels some of the scenes gave you outshines all the flaws by far in my opinion. It was everything a true Star Wars fan could've hoped for. My dad saw 4, 5, and 6 in theatres 5 times each, and even he loves The Force Awakens. So you people should stop whining and be happy that Star Wars is back.

@Spoon366 The thing is SW has never left. It just gets crappier each time.
And it's not "whining". I just do not agree to rapes and murders- first Indiana Jones now Han Solo! I wonder what will happen to Deckard :(
