Rose Tico is a new and original Star Wars character created by acclaimed writer-director Rian Johnson. She appeared in The Last Jedi and was received positively by most people. Unfortunately a vocal minority of Star Wars fans hate the fictional character of Rose so much that they have been harassing and sending death threats to the actress who portrays her, Kelly Marie Tran. This harassment was so rampant and disgusting that it forced Tran to delete all of her social media posts on Instagram. She received several racist and sexist comments and messages from trolls and obsessed haters. Tran's Instagram account is still live, but there are no longer any posts. There is only a bio line that says "Afraid, but doing it anyway."

Rose Tico was the very first female Asian character to be featured in Star Wars film. Most audience members and members of the Asian American community enjoyed Rose as a character. Nevertheless trolls came to the attack with abusive comments and death threats.

The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson tweeted today about what happened:

"On social media a few unhealthy people can cast a big shadow on the wall, but over the past 4 years I've met lots of real fellow SW fans. We like and dislike stuff but we do it with humor, love & respect. We're the VAST majority, we're having fun & doing just fine.

Johnson then went on to refer to the people who harassed Tran as "manbabies" who need to move on already. Social media can be a nasty place for anyone who gets involved with these big franchises. What do you think of this news? Sound off below.

Some people have way too much time on their hands. Now I wasn't a huge fan of The Last Jedi myself, but at the end of the day, it's just a movie. Harassing the cast and crew behind it is unacceptable regardless of the movie's quality.

@BiggerLuke - Agreed. The Last Jedi ruined this series of the Skywalker Saga for me, but I would NEVER consider harassing Ruin Johnson because of it, nor any of the cast. I'm sure he didn't set out to make a movie 50% of the fanbase wouldn't like.

I must say it definitely bums me out too, especially because I was a big fan of Boyega before he was cast. I just won't pay another cent towards this series...I'll just happily watch the originals until I forget them...

@Talontd - That wasn't my main point, but okay.

@Talontd - "...but okay." What's the matter? He didn't say anything offensive, and agreed with you about attacking the creative talent of the film, while stating his opinion. Why act so flip about his response?

@nisora33 - It's more the language he used. Ruin Johnson is such a childish nickname.

That's unfortunate. It's just a film, people.

Debate is one of the great things about film, you talk about how it changed you, made you think, characters you like or characters you didn't.

This behavior is unacceptable, like the movie or not, like a character or not, but don't take it out on the person playing somebody

This is outrageous! I cannot understand direct harassment of an actor. Sure if you don't like the character then express that, but directly going after someone is just a bridge too far!

Ive loves Star Wars my entire life and will continue too. But I can’t stand the fanbase, they hate every single movie, drove 2 people off Twitter, screwed up Jake Llyods life, protested a black storm trooper and are overall immature. I understand it’s not all the fans but it’s such a large portion.

@StarlordsDad - also made George Lucas hate it and sell it and now they’re upset he sold it
Spidey91

this fanbase (well, the vocal, toxic minority within it) has been harassing and ruining the lives of people involved with it way before Kathleen Kennedy got a hold of it. that's a fact. they should either own that fact or get f*cking lost from now on.

Spidey91 - 6/5/2018, 8:56 PM
Lucas was probably so f*cking done with all of it that maybe that's the reason he sold it to Disney in the first place.

It was pretty damn heartbreaking to see someone who seems like such a genuinely positive human being receive some of the most ignorant, childish and disgusting comments I've ever seen on social media. All over a FICTIONAL CHARACTER SHE WAS HIRED TO PLAY IN A MOVIE.

I don't blame her at all for leaving, who the hell wants to deal with nonsense like that all the time?!

@ALegendaryPanda - I absolutely agree. She, nor the other creative talent, deserve this. I'm mad at Rian, but I'm actually more mad at Kennedy et. al. for taking a first draft of this and not giving him constructive feedback and getting further drafts of this script. It could have been better; as a creative type, I admit I need a lot of help in editing my products (its taken me 34 years to admit this) and they didn't give him that. A shit show all around.

This happens almost every single Star Wars film and something needs to be done about it. Honestly, feel incredibly bad for her and I liked Rose a lot! And Kelly seemed so happy to be on board for the franchise only to receive hate and ignorance for no reason at all.

There's a vile undercurrent that runs through the Star Wars fanbase that makes it hard for me to engage with it. This kind of stuff happens way too often with Star Wars to write it off as just a few trolls.
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 6/5/2018, 10:35 PM
just further proof that the whole TLJ debacle was never about the movie itself.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 6/6/2018, 3:33 AM
@Spidey91 - What was it about then? A few trolls don't mean all criticism of the movie is illegitimate.
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 6/6/2018, 8:22 AM
@Nightwing1015 - not saying criticism is illegitimate. but in TLJ's case, less criticism seems to be about its actual components as a movie but rather about just certain characters in particular: Rey, Rose, and Holdo.
here's the kicker: people claim they don't like Luke's portrayal, or Kylo Ren, or Snoke, or Poe....buuuuuuuuut those characters (or the actors) don't get attacked nowhere near the level those others are. and sometimes, you just have to wonder...why?
then you arrive to a simple conclusion: just the women are being targeted with such hate. they obviously didn't drove Mark Hamill or Oscar Isaac away from their social media accounts, they did it with Kelly Marie Tran and Daisy Ridley.
the actual, legitimate criticisms one could throw at the movie are BURIED under a sea of good ol' plain sexism and misogyny. and I think that's a bigger discussion to be had than the actual flaws of the movie.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 6/6/2018, 8:42 AM
@Spidey91 - "legitimate criticisms one could throw at the movie are BURIED under a sea of good ol' plain sexism and misogyny."

I disagree. I've seen far more legitimate criticism. Women and minorities have always been in Star Wars so I don't buy the fact that the whole fanbase have secretly been out to get them the entire time. It's a few trolls with very loud voices. They are a vocal minority and TLJ debacle was about much more than them.

Her character and Holdo were the weakest part of the movie other then the crap story but going after an actress over the part that was written for that character is flat out stupid. I agree her character was sh*t but to attack her Vietnamese heritage and going all racist on her? Wtf? I’m anti-SJW but going after a persons race is retarded. Some of these fans just need to chill and back off. Criticize the character not the actress. Feel bad for Marie.

Awful character ( and movie ) but no reason to harass an actress over it.
