So I assume that will be used on the Lego sets.

The original trilogy was great but something that the prequel trilogy did that made the universe of Star Wars better was the lightsaber duels. The fighting from the prequels was what made those movies decent. I hope they transitioned those fighting styles into the new films.

@VisualMaximus You're just a dumbass if you think the fighting was better in the originals.

People need to unsderstand the light saber battles in the prequels are completely different than the original.

Original had:
Old Obi-Wan past his prime fighting Vader
A young not a Jedi yet Luke fighting Vader in which Vader toyed with him throughout the fight.
Jedi Luke who did not want to fight Vader and Vader who did not want to fight and hurt his son

They were not as good in terms of coolness but the emotional weight of the fights is what made them great

Prequels took place when the Jedi were at their peek which is why the fights looked cooler but besides the Obi-Wan/Maul fight and Obi-Wan/Anakin fight, none of them were emotional.

In short, you can't really compare them.

@Kr08 So basically you're saying you only like the flips, swoosh noises and the spectacle. Do you not care about substance at all? Because that's what the prequels were btw all flash, no substance, like none whatsoever. It's already been adressed in the RedLetterMedia annihilation of those movies, but a fight scene isn't great just because there's a lot going on, or the fighting is 'technically' better, what makes a fight scene great is when you're invested in the characters who are fighting, and it feels genuine and real. That's why the fight between Vader and Luke in Jedi is so much better than any lightsabre fight in the preqeuls. It's earned. And more importantly there's some emotion behind it,Luke is just flailing around and is careless but that makes sense for the character, he's angry, hurt and wants to take Vader out. In that fight scene at the end of Phantom Menace it's just a bunch of glossy dance moves, you don't believe that anybody is hurt.

@VisualMaximus You clearly have never sen the battle between Vader and Batman on youtube

@Kr08 - The TPM duel is okay. Other than that... hell no. OT duels all the way, especially ESB's. They're swordfights in the OT. They reflect character. The PT features dance battles with glowsticks.

Yeah, the fights in the prequels were all style, no substance whatsoever. They looked like fully-choreographed dance numbers, rather than life or death duels that actually had some weight behind them (like the originals). In fact, that gif of Anakin and Obi Wan just twirling their lightsabers in a superficially "cool" way and yet doing absolutely nothing is a pretty good summation of the entire prequel trilogy.

Anyhow, I'm assuming we're going to be getting something new with The Force Awakens tomorrow?
Kr08
Kr08 - 5/3/2015, 8:24 AM
@Ryden It's funny how you assume that I like the flips and swoosh noises. I like the fact that in the prequels they actually used martial arts. They used actual martial artists in various fight scenes. Yes, some of them were overdone, but it's better than having Vader and Luke touching each other's tips. People may not have been as invested in the prequel characters but the fight scenes were definitely a lot better. All I said was that they should have those type of fighting styles for the new ones, seeing how people are going to be far more invested in the new trilogy than the old one.

The Revenge of the Sith fight scene of Palpatine vs Yoda + Anakin vs Obi Wan was the best in all 6 movies. Yeah, there is that one scene where Obi Wan and Anakin just spun their lightsabers in front of each other but other than that, all of it was great.

Ryden
Ryden - 5/3/2015, 8:50 AM
@Kr08 - Your point is? What good is having the characters know martial arts when the impact is completely lost. You even admit yourself that people were less invested in those fight scenes. That's true, and because of that they are unsucessful fight scenes. That's a big reason why people hate the Transformers movies but like the Avengers, despite the action being very similar. The action can be choreographed really well, meticiulous in its practice but no-one cares about the characters in Transformers, we care about the Avengers. It's the exact same thing with the OT vs PT, except OT used their limitations to their advantage and managed to present emotionally tense and powerful scenes that didn't require a hundred special effects or an intricicate lightsabre battle. I'd much rather watch Vader and Luke 'touching tips' than watch a boring, stoic, emotionless monk with absolutley no personality fight a CGI guy with like 6 lightsabres to a boring, stale unrealistic background, despite the amazing choreography because I like my movies to have a bit of emotional weight to them.

*sigh*

While I do love a fast-paced lightsaber duel as much as the next guy, there really is so much more to a lightsaber duel than two people smashing their sabers together.
Ultimately, while the prequel duels looked cool, there wasn't any depth to them.
I appreciate them for their visuals, but not much else.

I'll just leave this here to explain:
It starts at 5:59

I want lightsabers duels to be fast, but believable. No bullshit dancing, and no light tapping.

I love how there is a bunch of plasma shooting out of Kylo Ren's lightsaber in that image. It doesn't look clean like the typical light saber, but I am sure they will explain why in the film.

Good luck avoiding spoilers with a tidal wave of product hitting stores over three months before the movie premieres.
