New STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Set Image With 'R2-D2'; Next Film Will Shoot In London Too

A new snap from the Star Wars set (posted by the UK's chancellor of the exchequer no less) has popped up online, and gives us another look at everyone's favorite little Astromech droid alongside director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm President Kathy Kennedy.

Sure we've had images of 'Artoo' on the Episode VII set before, but it's always nice to see more of his shiny little head. Plus, that's not all we have. The below image was posted to Twitter by the UK's chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne (no relation to Norman), who payed a visit to the set today -- and along with the pic her confirms that Disney/Lucasfilm will be returning to film another Star Wars flick at some stage. In a separate statement he revealed that this will be the first standalone film, which will be directed by Godzilla's Gareth Edwards.

The first standalone Star Wars film will hit theaters on December 16, 2016, a year after Star Wars: Episode VII opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.

First, let me start this by saying I like R2. Pimpest droid ever indeed.
But shit, shouldn't his warranty run out by now? Swamps and deserts...asteroid belts and Hoth. Not saying that I need to see him go, but lets start getting some new blood into the movies already. Maybe Luke turned him into an umbrella stand or something. Repurposed!
