Lucasfilm made the shocking announcement last night that Rian Johnson has been hired to take the helm of a brand new trilogy of Star Wars movies. That means Disney is clearly very happy with his work on The Last Jedi and seeing as this series is expected to revolve around a brand new cast of characters in a different part of the Galaxy, it's clear that the franchise is about to head down a new path.

What that will
be remains to be seen but we know it won't have anything to with the Skywalker family, so it's a story which could really take place in any era and with an entirely different sort of aesthetic.

Regardless, Johnson has now taken to Twitter and shared his thoughts on the news and as you can see, the filmmaker is clearly anxious that fans enjoy The Last Jedi now that they know he'll be writing and directing an entire trilogy! Lucasfilm is no doubt going to want those to be released every other year from 2020/2021 onwards, so he's obviously going to be extremely busy for the foreseeable future...

This needs to be set in the old republic. It doesn't even necessarily have to be any of the stories already set in SW history. But putting it thousands of years before Ep1 gives them the freedom to pretty much do whatever they want. More options, never a bad thing.

@Zer0squad - Yes! This is exactly what I’ve wanted since the news of new Star Wars films broke out. And you share my exact line of thinking. So much freedom without contradicting the main films, so much fresh territory to explore.

I’ve been replaying Knights of The Old Republic on the Xbox One and it’s just reinvigorated my feelings on wanting to see that era brought to life.

@Zer0squad - Or will it be a prequel based on Rey's childhood? Similar to what Anakin got... will we see more formula repeat?

I really hope I'll like TLJ, because Johnson doing non-Skywalker Star Wars could possibly be the most exciting thing in the franchise for me personally since the announcement of the preview trilogy.

These Star Wars and Disney news hit me like a freaking truck lol. Well i'm always open to more stories, it's a vast and wide galaxy after all, with rich myths and legends. The Last Jedi looks beautiful in my eyes and can't wait for it, as well as i'm looking forward to how all of this develops.
