Thanks to a wide array of problems behind the scenes, Solo: A Star Wars Story's budget ballooned and a last-minute marketing campaign meant it essentially crashed and burned when it was released in May 2018.
As a result, Disney decided to hit the pause button on its planned "A Star Wars Story" spinoffs, including rumoured movies for characters such as Obi-Wan Kenobi (who later received his own Disney+ series) and Yoda.
Every May, Star Wars fans mark the anniversary of Solo: A Star Wars Story's release by taking to Twitter and Instagram to demand that Lucasfilm #MakeSolo2Happen. Thus far, Lucasfilm has done nothing to make a sequel a reality, with even plans for a Donald Glover-led Lando spin-off on Disney+ seemingly falling by the wayside since being announced.
During a recent interview with Gizmodo (via SFFGazette.com) to discuss Cocaine Bear, Han Solo actor Alden Ehrenreich reiterated his hopes to reprise the role he took over from Harrison Ford.
"If it was the right iteration and the right thing, I would love [to come back]," he says. "Because, for me, in the first movie you watch him become Han. I got to be Han Solo for the last 15 minutes of the movie, maybe. And so being Han Solo is the fun part. And I have no f***ing idea if there is ever a world where any of that happens, and if it happens, great, if it doesn’t, whatever."
"I think the original vibe of all that stuff was almost more like an Indiana Jones idea where you would get to watch this guy be that guy over the course of a few movies," Ehrenreich said of original plans for Han on screen. "Anyway, so that’s appealing about it to me is that character and getting to do that."
As much as we'd love to see the actor get another shot at playing Han, Lucasfilm has started utilising very clever de-ageing technology in recent years, making it more likely Ford would play Han again if he is set to make another appearance. However, if he's completely closed the door on the character (he doesn't love him as much as we do), there's always a chance.
Are you hoping Lucasfilm eventually agrees to #MakeSolo2Happen?
