A long time ago in a Galaxy far, far away, Lando Calrissian, originally played by the incomparable Billy Dee Williams, was the only prominent Black character to appear in the
STAR WARS trilogy. This, of course, changed once the prequels brought Samuel L. Jackson into the fold as Jedi Master Mace Windu, and John Boyega's addition as Finn to the current sequel trilogy has shown an effort in including some representation. But surely there are more than just a handful of Black humans in all the Galaxy, right?
In last night's episode of SNL, Donald Glover not only gave fans a taste of what to expect from his upcoming portrayal of Lando in
SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, but also a satirical look at the status of Black humans in the
STAR WARS universe--and the results are pretty damn funny.
The skit pokes fun at the low number of Black humans in the Galaxy by having Lando attempt to bring them all together for one Galactic Summit. Guests include Saw Gerrera, played by Kenan Thompson, Key Beeba (Leslie Jones), and Endeco (Chris Redd). The bit also ends with Glover showing off his musical side with a lounge song accompanied by Max Rebo of the famed Max Rebo Band.
