Love it or hate it, there's no denying Star Wars: The Last Jedi has sparked debate among fans in ways few blockbusters before it have managed.

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI SPOILERS - 7 Major Questions We Have Leading Into EPISODE IX

Director Rian Johnson spoke to Empire as part of their spoiler podcast on the film, and he addresses all of the most shocking and divisive moments that fans are still talking about, as well as some of the lingering questions we have leading into J.J. Abrams' Episode XI.

On the topic of Rey's parentage, Johnson admits that he did consider other options before ultimately deciding that having her mother and father be "nobodies" made the most sense dramatically, because it's the hardest possible thing that Rey and the audience could hear in that moment.

The director also touches on Luke's death, which is arguably the thing that has come in for the most backlash. Johnson says that he wanted Skywalker's peaceful end to be a contrast to Han Solo's violent "defeat" at the hands of Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens, and he also felt that the "grand act" was the best way for Luke to become a legend once again in order to restore a spark of hope to the galaxy.

Be sure to listen to the podcast for yourselves, as Johnson also discusses Leia's fate leading into Episode XI, The Knights of Ren, Luke's force-powers and much more.
