Warning: Spoilers for Season Four of Star Wars Rebels Ahead
Dave Filoni’s Rebels series has had its ups and downs. Although the creator of the series would never acknowledge it, the first three seasons had some episodes that could be deemed filler. Episodes including Ezra communicating with space whales, or AP-5 floating in space singing. These moments, although entertaining, sometimes don’t contribute to the larger picture, specifically the Rebels relation to Lothal, and the core character’s arcs.
Season four has provided a nice change of pace. Filoni and crew have allowed for the overarching story we have been exploring since season one to finally come to the forefront, providing us with epic space battles, indications at some closure on Lothal, and even Hera and Kanan kissing.
Last night’s episode, Rebel Assault, was one of the better episodes in some time. Giving the viewer a showdown between X-wings, Y-wings, Star Destroyer’s, TIE fighters and a TIE Defender. The battle was reminiscent of some classic Star Wars moments, but this episode still didn’t feel too action heavy. We are also provided with the Ghost crew on Lothal; Kanan attempting to save Hera, while she desperately tries to escape the capital city.
Although the Kanan storyline with the Loth-Wolves has been intriguing, at times it has seemed out of place. Kanan is confronted by a Loth-Wolf while trying to save Hera, leaving the viewer to question the significance of these animals within the context of the larger story. The episode gave the audience a good cliffhanger, but perhaps it could have been attained in a different manner.
Overall, the first half of season four strung together some of the more cohesive episodes we have seen. With the show coming to a close, it is looking like there are some promising moments to come.
