"This is not going to go the way you think." If
Star Wars: The Last Jedi proved anything, it's that fans should probably stop speculating about the developments of the new trilogy. Coming off the release of
The Force Awakens, we had two years to think about where the sequel's story would go, which lead to infinite amounts of rumors and fan theories popping up. In this piece, we take a look back at some of the biggest ones that ended up being disproved upon the film's release. Check them out below!

Luke Skywalker VS. The Knights of Ren
One of the biggest rumors about
The Last Jedi swirled around the mysterious
Knights of Ren taking on Luke Skywalker on Ahch-To in the film's third act. Some of these rumors and
"leaks" stated that they had witnessed a scene being filmed that involved the Jedi Master taking on the Knights single-handedly, besting them all. The reports said the sequence involved stuntmen and wire work, though no concrete evidence of this ever surfaced. Of course, the Knights of Ren don't even make an appearance in the final film, and no one goes to Ahch-To but Rey, who leaves after she finally sees that Luke won't leave the planet.
Snoke's Identity Revealed
Rampant speculation about the mysterious
Snoke began before
The Force Awakens even hit theatres, and while many believed him to be Darth Plagueis (Palpatine's unseen master mentioned in
Revenge of the Sith), rumors about the Supreme Leader's identity ranged from him being the first Jedi to Ezra Bridger from
Star Wars: Rebels.
While director Rian Johnson confirmed that his film wouldn't delve into Snoke's story, rumors persisted that Snoke's past would at least be hinted at. Of course, the final film proved the entire internet wrong, with the Supreme Leader being dispatched midway through the film by Kylo Ren without so much as a tidbit about his backstory.
Luke Turns To The Dark Side
"It's time for the Jedi to end." The ominous phrase from the film's first trailer sparked some heated rumors that
Luke Skywalker had fallen to the Dark Side of the Force, or at least embraced it in some way. While the Jedi Master did have a dark urge to kill his nephew, Ben Solo, to prevent a greater evil, he stayed his hand at the last moment. While some didn't enjoy the film's decision to have Luke turn his back on the Force and the galaxy, it might have arguably been a worse decision to have him completely renounce the Light.
Rey VS. A Sea Monster On Ahch-To
This rumor came from
Making Star Wars, whose report gave details on the creatures of the island of Ahch-To. While the website ended up being right about the film's loveable Porgs being inspired by Skellig Michael's puffins, it also suggested that they were the island's protectors and that Rey would have to take on a sea monster in order to get their "permission" to stay.
You CAN glimpse the tail of a sea creature in the film, though Rey doesn't have any significant battles with anyone but Luke, and the Porgs don't end up having any impact aside from being adorable!
Kylo Ren Wears Darth Vader's Cape, Visits His Castle
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story introduced us to Darth Vader's castle on the planet Mustafar, and rumor had it that Kylo Ren would be paying a visit to the deserted castle in
The Last Jedi to further his connection with his grandfather and complete his training. A
separate rumor also suggested that Ren's new cape would actually be Vader's. Both of these were proven to be untrue, and the film sees Kylo Ren destroying his Vader-esque helmet and trying to shed the past, along with Vader's dark legacy.
Kylo Ren Is Redeemed
While it seemed that Kylo Ren solidified his villainy by murdering his father, Han Solo, many of the trailers for
The Last Jedi showed a conflicted Ren that was seemingly still torn between the Light and Dark sides. This lead to several theories that despite Ren's training, he would ultimately shift back to the light while Rey would turn over to the Dark Side. While the final film showed an understanding formed between the two characters, Kylo Ren took one more step towards the darkness by murdering his master and ascending as Supreme Leader of The First Order.
Rey Is A Reincarnation of Anakin Skywalker
This
rumor came very early on, stemming from the ending of
The Force Awakens. With Rey shown to be strong with the Force, it was posited that she was actually a "reincarnation" of Anakin Skywalker. The theory/"leak" went on to explain that the Force would reincarnate a Chosen One to bring balance, and that Rey was a product of the Force itself much like Anakin was in the prequels.
The film shot this one down pretty handily, revealing Rey to be "no one", much like the trailer for
The Force Awakens hinted at. Kylo Ren reveals that her parents were Jakku junkers who sold her for money, and are dead and buried back on the desert planet.
